I’m becoming more and more certain that the whole alt-right and conspiracy theory communities have been heavily infiltrated by the Russians.
I mean, everything these conspiracy theorists say turns out to be goddamn Russian propaganda. I’ve studied conspiracy theory academically, and the goddamn conspiracy theory sites regularly post stories from RT and Sputnik.

I took the class while I was working for the Office of Naval Research, as many people in the middle east believe in conspiracy theories (actually a lot more than the US). Conspiracy theories play on fears, are used to explain confusing things in the world, and are based on a kernel of truth.
Some people fear Jews for example, because Israel has attacked many innocents, so anti-Semites play upon this fear and create conspiracies about how the big bad jews control the world and how they need to be stopped before it's too late.
Also, it is thought that people subscribe to conspiracies because it helps to explain the confusing world to people. Why am I poor, why is life so painful, why can't I get ahead in the world? Well, it's because the evil people in the Illuminati are conspiring against the populace. It's not just random, or it's not because I haven't worked hard enough, it's because some demonic people are trying to attack me. It's easier to believe that some powerful group of people is keeping you down, than to believe that you are directly responsible for your acts, and therefore your future. It's not me who caused my status in the world, it's the evil, demonic illuminati. It's no longer my fault, it's the fault of others.
Also, it is true that the US government has actually conspired against people in other countries. The US is notorious for doing that. So, if X is true, maybe conspiracy Y is true too.
