You need approximately 2.2 million (net not liquid) to be considered rich.

Keep in mind this is a generation that think rich people go around spending 8 million on a maybach and having massive car collections

Bill Gates owns 23 supercars but he's worth Billions. Thats super rich, not regular rich.

Regular rich is the like the family from Home Alone.

You just know Papa McAllister was an Irish mob lawyer in Chicago.

He had 5 kids and could afford that crib plus vacations....and the brother that lived in Paris had MORE $$$$.

Because we all have seen celebrities and lotto winners go through it in a couple months … we know it doesn’t last for most people unless you’re responsible enough to handle it. Also if you’re being responsible with it you can’t live rich you have to live middle class to make it last budgeting it out and investing wisely. So 2.2 million isn’t really rich like we see in the media it’s just more well off than the average person.

So does the money itself make you rich?

Or does looking rich make you rich?

Admittedly theres an argument to be made on both sides. If I had 2.2 million, lived a comfortable life I probably still wouldnt be considered rich. Those lotto winners blew threw the money because they wanted everyone to know they were rich. So I will concede,I guess being rich would be the ability to live where everyone knows your rich. While still being able to live comfortably and not run out of money. That would take more than 2.2 million.

but i'm just saying, being rich doesn't mean you can afford to own a super yacht and a private jet, or several vacation homes somewhere tropical.

It could just mean you live in a neighborhood where your neighbors are all doctors and lawyers, and have access to a members only golf course.
Them mcAllisters were vacationing, but they were still flying commercial.

Owning your home and cars outright, $62.5k is middle class living, not upper middle class living. By 2033, it will be lower middle class living. Remember, you are still on the hook for taxes, insurance, and maintenance for your home and car(s). You also will be on the hook to subsidize your healthcare and dental insurance. In 2033, you ain't taking no cruises or lavish international travel. So we calling this rich?
With all due respect, you're an idiot.

I prefaced what I said with "It depends on how you live".

Owning a home and having a passive income of 65k a year is rich. You would not have to work another day in your life.

Lavish holidays without a care in the world is stepping into the obscenely wealthy ballpark.

Is a $2.2 million net worth enough to retire and maintain an upper-middle class lifestyle? I doubt it. If not, a $2.2 Million net worth shouldn't classify you as rich.
It depends on where you live, how old you are and what bills you have

If you dont have a mortgage/rent, car payment, or kids to take care of and at least 50+, you’ll probably be good

Rich isn’t relative.

You don’t have to be I’ll buy a Ferrari just to match my outfit - rich. But rich has a certain entry level on what you can afford and yes you can live at the bottom of rich with 2.2 million.

Rich is for example being able to fly private all the time. Rich is having a multi car garage because you need it. Rich is being able to afford multiple houses and being able to buy multiple businesses.

Rich isn’t upper middle class either.

Upper middle class is being able to buy a couple luxury cars without any burden. Being able to afford a 15K - 60k a year school for your kids. Upper middle class is not having to think about groceries, clothes, basic travel, utility bills or small credit card bills in any way. Like Home Alone.

2.2 will have you just above upper middle class and at the door of rich.

Do you own a home? Even you when you pay off your mortgage, you still pay property taxes, home owners insurance, and general maintenance/upkeep. My response was based the $750k home you provided as an example. Is that $65k pre or post tax? I assumed it was post tax. I even qualified my statement regarding how they will live today vs 10 years later given the higher COL and general inflation. Yep, those property taxes, insurance, and upkeep rise in costs too. Lastly, the scope of this entire thread is defining how much to make someone rich. You simply failed to prove that, giving an example of some house poor retired folks who probably will have to sell their home within 10 years if there is a major stock market dip.

At the door, still not in the clubhouse.
