A lot of old people give terrible advice. A lot of family members give terrible advice. And women, especially in a family, who gang up on the SO of another woman give incredibly bad advice.
While "date a white man" isn't really bad advice if it was phrased as "date any other man", it certainly is misguided. That comes from the minds of women who probably don't deal with white people on a regular basis or only from a distance. Same mentality that thinks all black men are dogs and a white man will treat you like a queen.
