If you're making 100K as a single man, you're doing good in 99% of the America with the exception of San Francisco, Los Angeles (like you said) and certain parts of NYC. I said certain parts because the 80% of people in NYC make less than six figures. Of course, 100K is losing it's purchasing power. Before that was enough to be one income household but, its getting the point that if you make 100K, your spouse will need to contribute or else you have to run a tight ship with your expenses. They can't be going to Target and spending $700 all willy nilly
It really depends on how nice of an apartment you want to live at and how often you want to eat out. Those two things drains most of that money.
You got people making 40k a year driving brand new cars but living in shytty apartments.
It boils down to how much you can save every month. Plenty of people making 100k living check to check.
