My english non-fiction writing professor actually said this to me in a class where I was the only black guy in it...

I found it so ignorant and always have...he wasn't the first...I heard it all the time growing up. When I would visit my relative in St. Croix my cousins would say my voice sounded funny...
I can't help that I'm a product of my environment. And that is of an Nigerian/West Indian black male that grew up in the suburbs and went to private catholic schools.
I actually am the master of several tone of voices and ways of talking now. Sometimes I talk really proper

, sometimes I talk really hood and use the n word

, sometimes I talk with a southern drawl

, sometimes I talk with a kind of cockney/english accent from spending a good amount of time in the UK when I was younger

, sometimes I talk like a fresh off the boat foreigner...
Bottom line is...
I'm just a weirdo.
