Time commitment. Most folks don't wanna put in the time. Furthermore, the return on investment for language learning is extremely delayed. Imagine spending an entire year studying Vietnamese or Hungarian just to be at the same language level as a toddler. So this discourages a lot of folks. But those who persevere get results.

Also worth noting, the spanish -> Brazilian Portuguese move is kinda cheating cause of the extreme similarity of the languages. It would be like an Englishman learning dutch where most words are shared and slightly changed.
