Deal: "...and the way he [Young Thug] used to write his music was pretty crazy. He would just draw what he wanted to do on paper. That's how he used to record; he would draw, like, a picture."

Interviewer: "What kind of picture?"

Deal: "Weird signs and shapes. He'd be in the booth looking at the paper, and one day I went in there and looked at it and said, 'You didn't write any words down.' He [Thug] looked at me and said: ‘I don't need no words.'"

HAHAH is this true?

this quote still amazes me

thugga gonna be studied in music classes in the future :blessed:

bless him

young xenakis :wow:

This is why we must protect Jeff at all costs - even from himself. Sure we can analyse what he has done so far.... but what's next :ohhh:

@Matt504 check this out brother

This part stuck out to me as especially true

"Young Thug's magic is underlying, below the surface level. His lyrics are not the distinguishing feature of his music but not bad either; and his sound is incredibly distinctive, rich with expressivity and phonological meaning (underlying feature)."

I didn't know what phonology meant: Phonology is a branch of linguistics concerned with the systematic organization of sounds in languages.

This clicks with me trying to put people on to Thug. Music can be inventive and thoughtful in terms of sounds rather than words and it can be deep and mind blowing to the same extent. He might be talking about general rah rah shyt but the way he's saying it is a real next level thing. Young Thug is a vocalist with a deep bag of tricks and he can be truly captivating at his best.

People with no musical knowledge exposing themselves in this thread.

If you broke down ANY artist like this you could make a case for genius, but if we're being straight, it isn't.
The whole point for "Having the vocals reflect the lyrics" is an ancient musical trick.

I know you don't want to understand, but rappers, and VOCALISTS, have been using these tricks forever. The whole
VOICE AS AN INSTRUMENT thing is as old as singing itself, and if you want to make it more focused on the rapping part, look
at James Brown.

Melody isn't as complex as people think it is. If you analyzed any rapper that sings/raps with melody you'd find plenty of musically
sound ideas. If someone went this in depth with Drake, I'm sure it'd look just as impressive.

Now, I think Young Thug makes catchy, good music. But, I don't like this idea that he's some melodic genius being repeated over and over.
What's the best way to get an idea in someone's head? Repetition.

You wanna know who was a genius? James Brown. Jimi Hendrix. Michael Jackson. To even put Young Thug on the level of such greats reveals your ignorance.
