The Rise & Fall Of Mufasa Choppa
Why?
1. The way he rolls out new music sucks. Why oh why, does Thug not have his own Soundcloud where he drops fresh music in a controlled fashion (a la Drake)? As it is, every new thug song which gets released/leaked turns up in someridiculously obscure corner of the internet which only KTT seems to be able to find. Is the wider public going to find these? No. Would they find them and listen to them in a centralised point such as a Soundcloud account? Yes. He should cut down on the snippets too. There is no mystery/suspense behind the release of new Thug tapes, because we generally have an idea of half the songs on that tape.
2. Thug's camp is still prone to leaks, and there's no question last year's tidal wave damaged him. Loads of unfinished music which was never meant for public consumption, and a lot which will never see the light of day now. Forced him into releasing SS1&2, which many were unsatisfied by as they had heard some previous version of 75% of the songs. Imagine if those tapes had come out in a controlled way- Best Friend and Stunna dropping as loosies in the runup to SS1, with a solid release date given to the fans. The hype behind 2 quality loosies would have made people a lot more interested in the tape and given it far more longevity after dropping if the music was fresh. He needs to tighten his camp up for good to prevent any leaks EVER happening again.
3. Flow of information should only come through Thug. BLB is an idiot. The guy gives out garbage, unreliable info every other day. All information should come through Thug himself, why do people need to go through his manager to get new information etc? It takes away from Thug's star, and he lets it happen. Thug should be the one responsible for giving fans information through social media, again centralising the flow of information so the public can consume it easily. Casual fans do not want to watch BLB's periscope all day for snippets of what seems to be 95% bad information. BLB should be invisible to the public, but it seems to me he wants to be his own celebrity. Not how it should be.
4. Thug needs to take lessons on public speaking and body language. The guy is clearly very uncomfortable in interviews, which is completely understandable. So take some lessons and improve on them! He has already missed out on so much free publicity by basically not interviewing at all for the last few years. The interviews he HAS done are painful to watch. He can hardly string a sentence together, and is squirming in his seat. Compare a Thug interview to the confidence of someone like 50 or Drake. Eloquent and relaxed. Thug is literally the opposite. I refuse to believe he is as stupid as he appears in interviews, and a lot of this must be down to confidence under questioning. Swallow your pride and use some of that money to improve your image Thug.
5. Lack of hot features. Thug has the power to turn a song into a gem when given a structure to work within (e.g. About the Money, Good Times, Throw Sum Mo, Bankrolls on Deck, Hookah, Lifestyle). Why isn't he on more hits?! His hook game is on point, he should be flooding the game with features at this point to build his mainstream profile.
Compare Thug to Travis. Thug is abundantly more talented when it comes to rapping/singing. Travis is doing so much better than Thug simply because he has extremely savvy marketing, and is able to put together a cohesive project. Travis' **** does not leak, and he has a vision for his music. He has direction. His rapping is weak and his music sounds overproduced (imo) but he knows how to control his image. It is a travesty that Thug is so far behind Travis at this point despite their comeups happening over a similar timescale.
I love Thug's music and think he has the potential to be a superstar... But i'm concerned if he carries on his current trajectory, his window of opportunity will pass by. His marketing strategy is diabolical. Someone needs to step in and manage this guy properly- support him with direction, structure and image, and let him worry about the music. If that happens, he just might shine.
