I was too young to realize the gravity of the situation.

All I knew was that my two favorite wrestlers, HBGOAT and Stone GOAT, were on a collision course. Late 97-early 98 remains my favorite era in rasslin

that stoneGOAT/HBGOAT tag title run :wow:

I was young but i thought it was a work. The whole WWF screwing Bret was an angle throughout that entire year. It lead to Bret's double turn at Mania. Matter of fact that storyline started at the Wrestlemania where Shawn beat Bret for the title. I thought it would start a new storyline with Bret but he never came to work again for over a decade.

Seeing how Bret is old school like his old man i still could see it being a worked shoot since he really does hate Shawn and its the only decision Vince could have made to make both happy. Bret never rally "lost" but Shawn got the belt.

At the time hell yeah I thought it was real, IMMEDIATELY

not because I was smart, but I honestly didn't believe wrestling could do a swerve like that kayfabe wise, this was before wrestling jumped the shark so many times and did so many work-shoot angles we're used to

With HBK's reaction and Bret's spit on Vince I was like :damn:

I was 13 and didn't understand the business side of wrestling, but I was a pissed off mark. It was the first WWE event I ever attended, haven't witnessed any atmosphere as hostile since. Folks were trying to jump the barricade to get at Vince and Shawn and the crowd went nuts when Bret spat in Vince's face. From that moment HBK became my most hated wrestler for the next 10 years.

I LIVE IN A CARDBOARD BOX!
I had heard the rumblings of Bret going to WCW from kids at school, but I unfortunately did not get the PPV that night. Next day, I remember asking one of my friends what happened, and he said "It just ended and then Bret started throwing everything." I was confused. Then, the nWo made their announcement on Nitro and I was shocked. Then seeing Rude on RAW and Nitro? :mindblown: I didn't really understand the whole depth of the situation. Not much I can add to the volumes that have already been written about this event. I think Bret was screwed, but Vince was in a tough spot as well. The whole ordeal sucks. I think, despite the fact that HBK was an unbearable c*nt around that time, Bret should've put him over. He was on his way out and was getting a sweet money deal from WCW so what the fukk does he care about Shawn getting the title? I would've been like ":rudy: Take your damn title...I'm getting paid. :myman:" I've been more interested in hearing and reading about the events leading up to and through that faithful night in recent years.

This match did get me interested in the behind the scenes action in wrestling. I had no idea about all the politics that occured in wrestling at this point.

I was a Bret fan growing up so it did have me :to: when I found out it was true that he was leaving. I just couldn't get into WCW like some of you so it was like seeing a longtime/childhood friend move away. And to go out the way they made him go :sadbron:
