I personally feel a growing negative connotation with people who identify as being a rapper . . in the sense that it's the same identity parameter that transexuals talk about. So dude who's earning $100,000 a year independently after building a viable business model around his product via self funded investment/risk is a rapper and a 16 year old who's never did anything more than plug a cheap mic device into their computer and downloading a beat on YouTube is also a rapper
You could understand the frustration, any person would be displeased by someone claiming the same title that you actively work hard to maintain
and with the influx of outlets allowing these people to host their music for free you have a growing prevalence of these "rappers". It waters down the credibility of the entire field. It's a matter maintaining the prestige of your profession. It's like that modeling company exec who's use to casting couching naive, yet advantageous/gregarious girls off of his clout finding that his position no longer has the same clout because little Jimmi has been running around town with his friends and $300 camera and he's also a "modeling exec" and talks the game, ultimately resulting in a lack of trust in the field and a lower value for the field
Cause there's levels to this
A serious rapper has to prove himself apart from someone who hasn't left their computer chair, you can imagine the frustration. It's just the boy who cried wolf principle. 20 years ago if you go up to a record exec and say you're a rapper and you have a full demo you'd raise their eyebrow because the job market for rappers isn't saturated by a bunch of people who didn't have to take the initiative that would've been required of them then, of actually calling up a studio and booking a session. Deciding to part with your money in exchange for pursuing a goal with no guarantee of success and the odds stacked against you in an astronomical favor but that was put aside because your mind is set on pursuing something that you're obviously passionate to get up and go do. This simple safetyguard kept a lot of people who are pretending out of the realm
If you want to know who's a joke take a look at how much they spend on their weed habit versus how much they spend on their pursuits in music.
So when you're an accomplished person in your field who's taken the prerequisite risks, entered a new world that was foreign to you and found a way to make a sustainable career of it you tend to frown on the "Oh, I'm a rapper to" without ever being on stage, without even paying the $10 to put your music on iTunes, aren't registered with any PROs and haven't even offered a product for sale I'm going to look at you like my little kid. This would be a good time to cue the Gene Wilder meme because that's the exact look I have for the "rappers" that fit the categories I describe
Example:
However, Ii you're serious and you have goals I will recognize that and I will never judge you for where you are today but I will acknowledge that you are serious in your intention to advance your current position
