The only reason we got Dark Tournament and Demon Tournament arcs like that was because the execs at Shueshia (Weekly Shonen Jump) were applying pressure to match that battle manga success of DragonBall.

Both fire, DBZ impacted harder worldwide due to the availability of more merchandise imo. Easier to become fanatical when you have 50 video games, clothes, posters, etc
