A lot of the immigrants who come over here legally were already the top echelon in their respective countries. They come here with a far different mindset than most of the people in their homelands.
Think about what type of person you would have to be in order to mobilize your entire family and move to an entirely different country with a different language and set of cultural customs.
It takes some amount of money.
It takes courage
Furthermore, it takes a higher level of intellect
When they come to the states they may not have a lot of money in their pocket starting off but they do have more wit than the average American.

And they are able to integrate into American society quite nice by maintaining the strong cultural customs of their societies (strong family units, discipline, delayed gratification etc) and reaping the perks of individualistic freedoms we have in America.

In a country like India, with over 1.5 billion people you have to imagine that the best of the best are coming to America.

Now logically how can most African Americans compete with this? Our culture is not family oriented and we have historically been at a disadvantaged due to systematic racism.

Though the greater American society may see us all as people of color the differences in our culture and experiences are polar opposites.
