Well other things come into play with Assad...the us was against Assad because Putin was using him (Syria) in a back handed kind of way(like Drake did Ar-ab) to draw the US into a state conflict...that's why Assad was so stone fisted against US policy at that time because Putin was backing him...but after the chemical gas attack against the Syria kids Russia had to back off and let Assad clean shyt up...honestly China is the ultimate supporter of illegal oil in the region and if its China it's Russia copping too...hence the reason bush termed Syria Iran and Iraq the axis of evil...because they are funded and supported by our long time rivals that they don't want to admit out loud...COMMUNIST CHINA and COMMUNIST FRIENDLY RUSSIA...Cold War never stopped really its just that now the Arab oil and jihad is in the mix too. The Russian airliner went down and then Paris so now all the gov't leaders are seeing the games they've played for so long are now coming to roost at their necks.
America doesn't look to buy illegal gas...even worse though America aims to control the price of all gas...which causes animosity, that's why China has been supported in its growth so the world can have some parity in who controls the cash flow.

Why would China and russia buy gas through ISIS if it gets smuggled through Turkey, a NATO country?

Russia, not so much (they do tho) because they have a good deal of oil reserves...but a lot to China. It's being smuggled through turkey, but not supported by the Turkish state(at least on record)...but the smuggle route is directly accessible into Europe from the Middle East...all hurt euro economies are interested...probably Greece Italy and definately Russia...Putin has no respect for NATO and virtually vetoes nearly every resolution they raise...Russia and China have always felt the US has too much sway over commodities...we aligned with the Saud's, Russia aligned with Iran Syria and basically any gov't that didn't favor us...it was going good til' Russia went to war with Afghanistan ...(foreign boots in Islam soil is a problem)...the game is still being played but the sides are less clear cut.
