The Cavaliers are disturbed by Thomas' medical situation, even though they probably knew everything it would say. They reportedly will ask for Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown, which the Celtics will resist. But also, the Cavaliers haven't actually asked for anything yet.

It's a little unclear what Cleveland is trying to accomplish here, or if they even plan to try to accomplish something. Their best-case scenario seems to be to acquire another first-round pick from the Celtics, but if they already knew about Thomas' medical situation, they could have simply tried to negotiate that pick out of the Celtics in the initial trade. Bulpett speculated Cleveland might be having some "trader's remorse."

Kyrie Irving trade: Cavaliers found nothing different from Boston Celtics' reports in Isaiah Thomas' hip (report)

So Cleveland's butt-hurt about the trade it agreed to with Boston. Sounds about right. :allgood:

Why do people keep bringing up Anthony Davis? Pelicans ain't trading him regardless of how their doing at any point:heh:

Obviously they shouldn't entertain any trade for him right now. Hes with them for the next 3 years (or 4 if he picks up his player option) and he's a top 3-5 untouchable in the league when you consider his production, skillset, accomplishments at his age :manny:

But the Pels have failed to surround a player of his caliber with the right team, other than getting Cousins. They signed Jrue to a an incredibly large contract when he's been injury prone and is at best a top 15 player at his position, and there's a risk DMC leaves in FA this summer.

But unless AD straight up says he's not resigning there, I'd at least wait 2 more years before entertaining trade talks.

:wtf:So what's going on here? If the Celtics were upfront about IT's medical situation their front office needs to draw a line in the sand, take the deal or leave it. I'm not seeing how Cleveland expects to get any added compensation, they're fukked.

I believe they'd need to prove that Boston lied about his medical condition as well, which doesn't seem like an easy thing to do I guess :manny:

Cleveland has put the deal on hold because of questions around Thomas’ hip, but the Cavs would be willing to go forward with the deal if the Celtics add another asset — say, Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown, the No. 3 picks in the last two drafts.

They shouldn’t. The Celtics are already giving up too much in this trade, and it would set a poor precedent to cave into the demands of a trading partner in this case — when the teams agreed to the trade, the Cavaliers already knew that Thomas was recovering from a hip injury, and this new demand has the air of extortion about it.

The Cavs may feel they have the Celtics over a barrel here, that to undo this trade and figure out how to welcome back Thomas and Crowder after very publicly sending them elsewhere would be devastating to the Celtics’ chemistry while still leaving open the possibility for Cleveland to deal Irving to another team. Should the Cavs pull back the trade, then deal Irving to Phoenix or New York or anywhere else, they’d have succeeded in moving Irving while also wreaking havoc with Boston, their top challenger in the East.

But don’t assume that taking Thomas and Crowder back would crush the Celtics. Thomas is, after all, a professional and has worn his sense of disrespect — he was the 60th overall pick, remember, and he has been traded three times now, including the Cavs deal — like a badge during his NBA tenure. He will also be a free agent next summer. If he returns to Boston, it would behoove him to maintain the level he showed last year, when he vaulted himself into MVP candidacy with his 28.9 points and 5.9 assists per game. (Crowder, for his part, was already slated to see a reduced role with the addition of Gordon Hayward and drafting of Tatum. Should the Cavs deal fall apart, Crowder might still be traded.)

First of all the Celtics did it dirty real dirty

Apart from that. The issue is you have a undersized player approaching 30yo who relies on speed and absorbing or rather avoiding contact to score which hopefully offsets his glaring negative on defense. Especially in the playoffs where coaches can focus on schemes of an opposing team, it gets trickier. Now said player is coming off a pretty serious injury in his hip. From the medical he has deformity of the ball plus tear which he could ignore and rehab without surgery or he could do surgery. He chose rehab since he wanted to get back during his Co tract year to justify his max contract demands. The feeling is that if this wasn't a contract year the smarter choice would be surgery and be back in the last month of the season. The cavaliers see all this and it may turn out to be not even a 1 yr rental but 3 months after which they would refuse to pay him max money. So that leaves them with a pick jae Crowder and the z guy. Not bad but not the steal they were expecting.
Overall I feel the deal still gets done. Both teams are exposed.
Celtic with disgruntled players and Cleveland with no team able to give them good picks
