At least 20 police officers have been injured in explosions near a football stadium in Istanbul, Turkey's interior minister says.

Suleyman Soylu said it was thought a car bomb had specifically targeted riot police.

Ambulances and police were seen rushing to the scene, and TV footage showed a fire burning outside the stadium.

Turkey has seen a recent spate of militant attacks in major cities that have left dozens of people dead.

The blast on Saturday happened two hours after a football match at the Vodafone Arena between Besiktas and Bursaspor, two of Turkey's top teams, ended.

Local media reported that fans had already dispersed. Bursaspor posted on Twitterthat none of its fan groups knew of any injured fans.

Mr Soylu said: "It is thought to be a car bomb at a point where our special forces police were located, right after the match at the exit where Bursaspor fans exited, after the fans had left.

"We have no information on the number of dead. God willing we hope there won't be any."

Photographs posted on Instagram after the explosion showed helmets strewn on a road.

    • Turkish interior minister says 20 people hurt
    • State media says blast caused by car bomb
(CNN)At least 20 people were injured on Saturday evening after twin explosions rocked Istanbul near Besiktas Vodafone Arena football stadium, according to Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu.

The explosions, one large blast followed by a smaller one, occurred after a football game, reported CNN Turkey.
"A car bomb" was the source of the explosions, according to Turkish state news agency TRT, citing the Interior Minister.

Two explosions rocked Istanbul on Saturday night.
Bursaspor had played Besiktas in a Turkey League game at the stadium earlier the same day. The stadium is close to Taksim Square, a major tourist area in Istanbul.
TRT reported the blasts targeted police. However, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Turkey has weathered a string of terror attacks over the past year as it faces the twin threats of ISIS and Kurdish militants.
The country is also still reeling from a bloody, but failed attempt at a military coup in July.
