Math Teacher Sexually Abused Brooklyn Student, 15, Police Say
A New York City schoolteacher was arrested on Wednesday and charged with sexually abusing a teenage student at a Brooklyn middle school where he worked, the police and education officials said.
The teacher, Andre Braddy, 34, was arrested around 2 p.m. at Lenox Academy, part of Public School 235 in Canarsie, by officers from the 69th Police Precinct. According to the police, Mr. Braddy sexually abused the student, a 15-year-old boy, over the last month in a school bathroom. He faces two felony charges of engaging in criminal sexual acts, which indicate that the contact involved oral or anal sex.The abuse came to light after the boy told one of his parents, who alerted the authorities, the police said.
Mr. Braddy was in custody on Wednesday evening and could not be reached for comment. He also faces one count of acting in a manner injurious to a child and one count of sex abuse, according to the police. A conviction on the more serious of the two criminal sexual act charges carries a sentence of up to seven years in prison. According to his LinkedIn profile, Mr. Braddy has taught eighth-grade math and advanced Algebra I at the school at 100-01 Flatlands Avenue since September 2015. In a statement, Douglas Cohen, a spokesman for the city Department of Education, said, “These deeply disturbing allegations have no place in our schools.” He said that Mr. Braddy was immediately removed from the school and “will remain away from students pending the outcome of the investigation and we will pursue his removal from payroll as soon as legally possible.”

For nearly three years until May 2014, he worked as a teaching assistant at the university’s Research Foundation and Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights.
He graduated from City College with a bachelor’s of science degree in mathematical sciences in 2012, and received a master’s degree in mathematics teacher education for grades 7 through 12 from the university in 2015. Lenox Academy is a middle school for gifted children within P.S. 235, whose population is largely drawn from the Caribbean islands, including Haiti, Jamaica and Barbados.
