not really. AD cuts the checks and for ESTABLISHED athletic programs like michigan, osu, usc, texas, etc, football is a money driver but other sports have history and matter

The athletic director is the person who hires and fires football coaches. They 'run the show' and 'call the shots'. That...is just a fact.
