A stronger Haiti means a labor shortage in the DR and less opportunity to use Haitians as political scapegoats. How will the DR elites react do you think and where will DR get labor for its resorts construction and agricultural sectors:patrice:

Whatever progress happens in Haiti is going to happen over time and slowly 10 - 20 year period, and I don't think it will mean a labor shortage at all in DR, both are very poor nations with massive unemployment rates , if anything it will "free up" jobs, my brother and 3 male cousins between the ages of 21 to 40 are all unemployed outside of little hustles they pick up here and there, so it won't be a lack of labor force . The political scapegoat thing is definitely going to happen, no more blaming haitians on that end but again we are many decades from that.

The elite classes as you called them at the end of day are the major cause of the problems that the whole island has, I don't think al ot of people here realize the massive level of government corruption that happens in DR & Haiti with this much money coming into Haiti best believe alot of corrupt politicians and business men on both end going to have there hands out

I believe in many countries the unemployment rate is tampered with by governments and business, not market driven . There's no guarantee that jobs will "free up" especially in the construction and agricultural sectors

Good bye Coli(2014-2020)
here's why I said why I prefer the Chinese over the Clintons

the Chinese are actually doing tangible things in Haiti, namely helping to improve infrastructure to industrialized standards. For example, the Chinest built this bridge going to my parents village:

24mcjde.jpg

before the bridge was built, you had to literally drive your vehicle through the water. When water levels were low, it was fine, but in the years of severe flooding, there were no ways to cross in a vehicle....you literally had to have someone swim you over the river (yea I had to latch on to some dude's back and he swam me over the fukking river, with my luggage...it was fukking crazy). People would die during flood season.

A Haitian construction firm came and built some rinky-dink bridge some years ago but it collapsed. They stole the money and skimped on the construction (as usual).

So long story short, I'm appreciative that the Chinese built this bridge (and other bridges, and also wired internet throughout the countryside). Now will they eventually expect something in return? I'm sure they will. What that is, I'm not sure but I'd rather get things done to progress the country now and figure it out later.

Its reasonable that people may not be trustworthy of the Chinese[I'm not really] but people[especially in this thread] need to us some logic. The "Chinese model" as of now is the best model. Especially better than "Foreign Aid" which Haiti has been getting by the West.

Building infrastructure does not go directly to the elite groups unlike with foreign aid.

Not a guarantee they will free up but if haitians see there is a opportunity to go work back in there home country where they won't be mistreated or discriminated I believe they will take it, leaving those jobs open hopefully for a Dominican to take it

On a separate note Haitians economy is going to depend on them developing another export outside of poverty (I could go deeper into this)

Imo Haiti could be a booming place for ecotourism and that's something that the locals could control.

My thing is the DR has imported foreign agricultural workers for the last 100 years (especially for the sugar industry). IMO Dominicans won't suddenly start wanting to work in these jobs if Haitian migrationto the DR slows

Above the fray.

EXACTLY. That was the biggest export since tourism collapsed. Haitians being used as stage props as white missionaries stood next to them begging for money to save their lives in ads for charities.

It was not the Chinese who built that bridge nor laying out the fiber optics cables for internet throughout the countryside.....

It's the Vietnamese.

you're probably right breh. I know the Vietnamese built many of the roads/bridges in Haiti. It gets confusing when everybody in haiti refers to them as "chinwa yo" and then you have to remember they call everyone who's asian "chinese"

I am 100% sure it was the Vietnamese due to the fact that they own Natcom Telecommunications. They been making roads to those far out isolate rural areas which had spotty phone service at best. And no sort of internet service.

Digicel does the same thing. Being that it is largest employer in Haiti, you will notice a lot of street signs, roads, street lights etc.. across the country that were donated by them.

Yeah, I am well aware how ppl in Haiti refer to all Asians as "Chinwa". They do the same with Latinos, in which they call them all "Panyols".
Ditto for whites..French, American, Canadian, Russian, etc... doesn't matter they're all "Blans" to them. :yeshrug:

Haiti is an agriculture goldmine. Plenty of use able land to grow food to feed the island and also export as well.
