It's not so much they are taught disarming them as it is lifeguards are taught that putting themselves in a postion where the victim can even throw hands at you in the first place is a last resort. They have a variety of different methods of saving people that don't involve coming face to face with to a distressed person in water

That’s true. But there are multiple techniques taught to lifeguards to remove a victims hands away from your body.

I was a lifeguard for 8 years, we had to get recertified every other year

Damn that really hurt my heart to watch that. That water literally sucked them straight down, i've never seen anything like that. Like whether you can swim or not, that water current is not letting you swim out no matter what. It happened so fast too the second they couldn't fight anymore, just disappeared under the water with the quickness. You could tell how strong that undercurrent was when he grabbed that log and the water was bucking him like a bronco so hard he couldnt even keep his limbs in order to hold the log.

I can't swim so I hope this isn't a stupid question.... but they kept telling the first breh to grab the wood

if he had grabbed the wood and held onto it, would he really have been able to use that to keep from going under? :lupe:
looked big enough... you see it didn't go under. if he'd have been CALM, he could have rested an arm or something that would allow him to keep his head above water until they could get him easier

too much panic did them both in...........

the problem with saving someone who doesnt know how to swim, they will drown you if you try to rescue them :francis:
yup.. first thing they taught us in the military. well first two things. first is how to tread water for long periods of time. second is how to be saved/save someone else.

they are literally dying in a mass of water.. only thing they can think of when touching you is life.. they will cling, grab and hold on to you FOR DEAR LIFE.... literally.. and end up pushing you down, holding you down or swinging around till they knock you out or kill you
