It would have simply because NWA was banned originally on MTV and the video to straight outta Compton debuted in 20/20.
Yet l, NWA needed the exposure on MTV with express yourself as back then mainstream acceptance and the gateway was MTV.
Originally nobody but college radio listeners knew whom NWA was.
As that is the only outlet who could play it as a gateway and I remember when it debuted on hpk and was not ever on 1390 with ramone ski and it did not even air on the house driven wkkc at the time either.
It was not till MTV did the gateway explosion of NWA occur and it is linked to the respect yourself video.

Dr dre from MTV is dead on and anyone who disputes that was not around at all then or cognitive.

nikkaz keep trying to make it like rap was ever liked in that era.
As the spearheading ted demme, ed and dre did is what brought rap into your mainstream non culture based home at 330 after school.

Preach...that Ted Demme reference though:ooh:

@Art Barr ....Dr. Dre and NWA had a strong street buzz LONG BEFORE yo mtv raps came into the picture

world class wrecking cru was big at urban radio and this album was CRAZY HOT in the streets.....before we even seen a video of NWA on mtv..

the world mostly got introduced to NWA vai the second lp STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON

but the first LP that the streets knew was THIS ONE!!!

You right by the Mecca and don't even know your own history.

Dr dre of nwa is not more cultural than dr dre and ed lover of yo MTV.

Dre of NWA may have drew higher.
Yet, he is not on no day ever regarded above ed and the original dre culturally.

You may like dre, from NWA and the fake mythos MTV has glossed over to give you.
Yet, it is not indicative of the truth.
Especially not as far as the original dr dre and ed lover on yo are concerned at all.

fukk MTV for removing and being demonstrative to yo.
in favor of reality show bs and beach front cast video shows.
that mix commercial crossover fluff with sellout rap music.

Ed lover and Doctor Dre had thier place definitely but above the man that had he not been here we wouldn't have got NWA, Cube, Doc, Snoop, Eminem, 50, Friday and every song he even had a HAND in producing? Nah, breh...

To be fair Yo MTV Raps did push NWA a bit. More in the Fab 5 Freddy days

I mean I get the narrative is they got no airplay on radio and MTV....in the daytime

But MTV did there part to promote them heavy on that show, as well as the first Cube solo.

Hell by the second album they gave em a pool party special

If you weren't on the west coast or the east coast in 1988 you didn't hear rap songs on the radio until they crossed over. Not all cable companies carried BET in 1988. Too short had clean songs for the radio & life is too short was played on MTV. Easy E had a clean side on Eazy Duz It & the we want eazy video was popular. NWA was hosting on MTV raps a couple of times. Most record sales over 500,000 were non-black listeners who watched MTV raps. I'm from chicago where they were no major acts & hip hop stations in 1988. Magazines were where you got information about hip hop. If dr dre said don't play Nwa then things might have been different. Who knows.

Something similar happened to me around 84 or 85 when I was a little kid...when the movie Breakin was popping it was on tv.. the part with Ice T performing. I didn't know his name but I asked my mom if she could buy me his tape she said yeah

I ended up with a Melle Mel album :francis:
I was like that's not the same dude

the way he explained during the interview was that he was there for certain parts of NWA's career...like when they were at the concert in detroit..then he talks about how he hooked up Cube w/ the Bomb squad to create AMW...and says w/o that hook up there wouldn't necessarily be a Cube/AMW
