The Amerikkkan Idol
The Amerikkkan Nightmare
I keep hearing this myth over and over again from fans of the current product, so I went over to Basketball Reference to peep this for myself and was surprised to see that players aren't really much bigger than they were even 50 years ago.
As you see, the average player in 1952 was 6-4, 195
In 1970, the average player was 6-6, 205
In 1980, the average player was 6-6, 204
In 1990, the average player was 6-7, 208
In 2000, the average player was 6-7, 216
In 2010, the average player was 6-7, 222
In 2020, the average player was 6-6, 218
And this year, the average player is actually smaller than the average player in 2000 at 6'6, 215.
People even get the ages wrong.
There's this belief that the league is so much younger than it used to be when in 1952 the average age was 26.3 and this year it's 26.1, about a month's difference in age.
