Columbus Short would have been the perfect choice. He actually looks like Freeway Rick. Omar Sy, Nate Parker, Donald Glover, John Boyega would have all been better choices.

Case in Point: Look at this thread.
America knows him as Mr. America's Got Talent. The streets know him as a soft nikka. Freeway Ricky? On what planet?
People may harbor the same feelings towards Glover. But not as strong. Also, Glover has Hollywood knocking on his door. He's going to make the jump soon.
I bet the only reason that Nick is even attached to this project is to get it funded. Most of America is like...who? The rapper? When it comes to Freeway Ricky. Hollywood executives aren't coughing up any money without a known name attached.
Still don't know how a person you never seen in more than small cameos on TV-shows would be a better choice than an actor with a resume with a wide range of movies.

Al though I agree on that he's most known for America's got talent right now, since it's a show with 10 million+ viewers it would be odd if he wasn't.
He had a strong internet campaign that got the attention of all the Hollywood trades and studios when people were pushing for him to become the new Spiderman.
He has a following. A following that's not The-Coli. He's not as unknown as you claim him to be.
I knew this had to be Rick Ross's idea. Hopefully someone steps in and helps this nikka realize his mistake.

No one has claimed that he's unknown, but he wasn't very known when his stans started a twitter for him to be the new spiderman. His fans magically creating an internet debate of a black spiderman, who obviously wouldn't be him was more impressive work of the fan than himself.
I fukks with Gambino, but his resume is non-existent for a lead actor role.
Comedy maybe. He's delivered in comedy, but to play a coke boss couldn't be further away from his resume.
And Gambino practically being known for playing a geek on a sitcom is not much better than Nick Cannon being a presenter.
With that been said I think both are bad alternatives, Imo Gambino is far worse.
But if the movie is picked up by some one of the shyttiest indie studios that hopefully is prepared to take a loss, then they might as well give Gambino a chance to do something far away from anything he's ever tried.

Don’t get me wrong, you can’t take away from what Jay has accomplished, but he let the actual money change him. You see it in his personal character. He doesn’t actually compete. I do what I want. It is interesting to hear people say I have changed. I have got the aggressive content in my material. The harsh realities. I have been nominated 13 times and haven’t actually won. The material that I am releasing is dirty, even more than Get Rich at this point. Dre didn’t actually mix my joint on time, but I love the response the project is getting at this point. I just pushed the reset button. The actual projections are interesting and response from them. My joints actually generate interest overseas, more than all of them. I am your favorite artist, and if I’m not, I wanna know why.
