Ive come to this realization recently. Everytime i see these rappers walking around in excessive jewelry i cant help but to wonder how little self esteem that person has to where they have to hide behind shiny jewelry.

Alot of these rappers come from environments where they are told that theyll never amount to shyt. Alot of these rappers come from hopeless environments where they grow to hate their own skin color and people who share their skin color. This is why white and lightskin women are common themes in rap videos.

Alot of these rappers grew up having extremely low self-esteem due to having no education/ work experience and or having to RESORT to drug dealing, being locked up and other low level activities.

Jewelry to alot of these rappers is their signal to society that they've "made it". It covers up their low self-esteem that theyve dealt with for their entire life and that they are no longer apart of the lower rungs of society.

But to me its like putting lipstick and a dress on a pig because of the ignorance of their music. Despite the flashy jewelry, the ignorant mentality is still their alot of the time. No amount of jewelry can mask an ignorant, low-level mentality.

Peace.

Is It In A Black Man's Soul To Rock That Gold?

As MC Schooly D put it, wearing gold “goes back to Africa.” Historians would agree, there is a connection, albeit underlying, between how African-Americans dress and the habits and customs of African ancestry.

The sharper the dress, the flashier the gold the more you are taking care of yourself and putting yourself ideally in proximity to important people and even to the divine,” said Robert Ferris Thompson, a renowned professor of African and African American Art who has dedicated his professional life to exploring the art history of the Afro-Atlantic world. “When the Portuguese first landed in Ghana the local chiefs with their gold and early versions of kente outdressed the greys. Score: Ghana 7, visitors 2.”

The source of this flashiness has been a gift and a curse. The continent’s cornucopia of gold, diamonds and other minerals are what determined the course of history when it came to the African continent and the explorers who would become its chief exploiters. The West African region got the name “Gold Coast” for obvious reasons."

It was common for our African ancestors to wear gold like we wear cotton today...it's an actual quote from an African I can't find at the moment... @PhonZhi you're projecting bro...

Do rappers still do this? Up and coming rappers usually shoot videos in tshirts while the top artists like Drake, Kendrick, Sean and Cole don't really wear jewelry like that :manny:
