Ryan Wolstat:
There has been speculation out there that Montreal’s Khem Birch is heading to Miami on camp deal. It’s true. Will happen today.
Strengths
- Big-time run/jump athleticism
- Great shot blocker
- Good rebounder
- 7-0 wingspan
Weaknesses
- Below average size for an NBA post
- Offensive game not that advanced
NBA projection: Birch has been projected as a late second-round selection.
2013-14 Season
Birch was voted the Mountain West Conference’s defensive player of the year and also made second-team All-MWC after averaging a double-double and finishing second in the nation in blocked shots. Birch finished eighth in Division I with 17 double-doubles. He flirted with a triple-double in a road win at Utah State, racking up 11 points, 12 boards and nine blocks.
Key statistics: 11.5 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 1.2 apg, 3.8 bpg, 1.3 tpg, 34.4 mpg, .510 FG, .693 FT
Cool statistic: In less than two seasons, Birch blocked 192 shots, just two short of UNLV’s career record set by Dalron Johnson (1999-03).

What Insiders Say
UNLV coach Dave Rice
"I loved coaching Khem for the last two years. He is a hard worker and a gifted player.”
What Outsiders Say
San Diego State coach Steve Fisher
"Birch creates so many problems for you because he's always lurking around the rim. He's been a thorn for us and has created a lot of problems for us, guarding anybody that drives to the rim. That's his home, and he doesn't want anybody to get near it.”
