nuclear war in my bag
the report that was the push for the US govt apologizing to japanese americans included some info: Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of CiviliansYou got a link saying the Italians and Germans were close to imprisonment in America?
the non-japanese that were ordered off coastal areas were all either italian or german, but the groups at large were lucky enough to not have more than a few hundred living out there
that same report, i think one of the 700s section, says that many in the War Dept were pushing for mass internment but were not successful
like all groups with different backgrounds but white skin, they were able to hide easier. they changed their last names and didnt teach italian and german to their kids, some became protestant, at least publicly.
it was a bigger deal in WWI because germans then were associated more with peace churches, who were more set apart from american society (think like amish people, many of whom didnt even speak english in that era), and since they refused military service on religious grounds, in any country, a lot of people thought it was a front for some undercover sabotage shyt. and if they werent down with those churches, they were associated with alcohol distributors. you think there was no ethnic undertones to prohibition?
breh even in brazil and other latin countries germans were sent to US internment camps on military bases. think about that, the US was even willing to imprison other countries' ethnic german citizens
shyt was brazy breh. white people fighting among themselves to make sure they stood out as more american than the next group, and then patting themselves on the back for defending freedom and beating racist oppression
