I just listened to "The Ringer" last night.
This album is like what would happen if Eminem dropped an underground version of Recovery. He had been steadily declining for years, but Revival did a lot of damage to his image and his reputation. People became a lot more comfortable with calling him a joke and making fun of him. He needed this album to get his edge back and prove that he was still serious about this hip hop shyt.
I'm just glad that after nine years, he finally dropped a straight rap album. No pop hooks (for the most part), no top 40 production, no saccharine love songs, none of that. Plus, it was a lot shorter than most of his albums so it was much easier to listen to. He finally realized that he can't sustain an album with 15-20 tracks anymore.
A year later, the tracks still hold up. The ones I don't really care about ("Normal," "Nice Guy") don't hurt the album as much as tracks like "Remind Me" and "Like Home" hurt Revival. "The Ringer" was the perfect way to set everything off. I like how the first three tracks are just hip hop. Very little hooks, modern beats, and Em's flow/delivery isn't as irritating as it usually is. I almost wish the beat for "Good Guy" was given to someone else because it could have been a nice little hit. I still think "Stepping Stone" is one of the best songs he's made in a long time. To me, "Fall" feels like the centerpiece of the album, like he's just tired of all the shyt people have been saying and he loses it. Like when he says:
"I can take all of you motherfukkers on at once
You wanted Shady, you got it"
You can hear thein his voice when he says that. The only thing I hope for is that he learns from this and the albums he drops in the 2020s are more hip hop and he does away with the pop shyt for good.
tbh I didn't think it was too bad and he destroyed MGK on Not Alike. Still, I don't really care about it now. I'm like that with most new stuff. shyt don't hold up.
Not Alike is way better than that shyt MGK put out tho
All this more or less. Not Alike was my song of the year.

. Video could have been crazy
I was bumping this in the whip last summer surprisingly. Def had to be the beats
