That really fukks up your cap space. If the Knicks do that; they'll only have around 30 mil in cap space for 2015-2016. Assuming you resign Melo, his contract would use that 30 mil, and you'll be out of the race for Rondo; Aldridge, and Love.
Not entirely....Let me explain why
Contracts expiring in 2015 off season
Bargnani at $12,000,000
Glen Davis at $6,600,000
Kendrick Perkins at $9,154,342
Contracts expiring in 2016 off season
Raymond Felton at $4,540,000
Gerald Wallace at $10,105,855
Iman Shumpert at $3,898,691 (If he's signs the qualifying offer)
At the end of 2015, the salary cap should be about $27,427,216... and assuming Shumpert is traded before he's up for free agency (restricted)...Now lets say I add Melo's salary at $20,000,000 per, then the salary cap will be $47,427,216. The salary cap is projected to be at $62.1 million while the luxury tax is estimated at $75.7million. Knicks would have $14,672,784 million in cap space left. Now, you're asking yourself how can I get a guy like Love and Rondo..etc or whoever. Contracts that expire in 2015 will become a hot commodity either during the season or the summer of 14'. They are flexible contracts to me as well. Plus, in my supposed trades, Knicks will have Shumpert and 2014 pick to move along with the expiring contracts either Bargnani, Glen Davis, Kendrick Perkins to acquire an impact player especially when teams start to become sellers. It will be a 2 yr process to get a Big three that resembles something that the Heat has already. I'm pretty sure Melo would take less for more help coming. Instead of $20 million per, he'll sign for $17million per. Also too, knicks in the off season of 2015 will have Felton and Gerald Wallace expiring to dangle to teams to acquire more help, plus still have Affalo, Gibson and Prigioni. Knicks will also have it's mini mid-level exception along with the Bi-annual exception.... Feel me?
I wish I was GM
