Watch Ted Koppel Call Out Bill O’Reilly to His Face: You Created Trump By Destroying Journalism!

In this clip, veteran ABC news anchor Ted Koppel blasts FOX pundit Bill O’Reilly – on his own show – for being a significant part of the reason that the Donald Trump phenomenon has taken off with such surprising force. O’Reilly begins by asking Koppel – who was the anchor on ABC’s Nightline for 25 years – how he would approach a Donald Trump interview, asserting that it would be a “difficult” one, perhaps due to Trump’s childlike tendency to throw tantrums when presented with questions requiring a nuanced answer.
But Koppel was one of the pioneers of American television journalism, and has been forced to watch it devolve into a ratings slugfest, turning our news to infotainment and propaganda – and knows who is to blame.
“You and I have talked about this general subject many times over the years. It’s irrelevant how I would do it. You know who made it irrelevant? You did.You have changed the television landscape over the past 20 years. You took it from being objective and dull to subjective and entertaining. And in this current climate, it doesn’t matter what the interviewer asks him — Mr. Trump is gonna say whatever he wants to say, as outrageous as it may be.”
When O’Reilly dodges and tries a different approach, Koppel nails him for that too:
“Well, you do it by reporting. It’s an old-fashioned concept, but I think demonstrating who and what Mr. Trump is and what his policies really amount to is something you don’t do in an interview. He doesn’t answer the questions.”
Which is absolutely right. The mainstream media has utterly failed in their task to properly question Mr.Trump and force to him to stand by what he says, refusing to call him out for his constant flip-flopping. But by the same token, they give him countless hours of free coverage, allowing him to spread his message of hatred and anger to a huge audience. FOX and CNNand MSNBC are all guilty; perhaps if we had more journalists in the caliber of Ted Koppel, we wouldn’t be seeing absurd conversations like the weekend interview where CNN’s Jake Tapper allowed Trump to claim ignorance of the Ku Klux Klan.
