New Training Staff

From Jason Lloyd:

Cavaliers overhaul training staff, adding two positions

The Cavaliers have created two new positions and overhauled their training staff, what they refer to as their “performance team,” in an effort to become more proactive instead of reactive to injuries.

Alex Moore was hired as high performance director, the team announced Friday, a position they just created. He will oversee the entire performance team, which manages the rehabilitation, physical therapy, nutrition, strength and conditioning and athletic training areas.

Yusuke Nakayama was hired as an assistant athletic trainer and given the new label performance scientist.

Steve Spiro has been promoted to head athletic trainer after serving as an assistant athletic trainer for the past three years. Spiro replaces Max Benton, who was informed shortly after last season that the Cavs were not bringing him back.

The Cavs have been hit hard by injuries to key players the last couple of seasons, which prompted the front office to begin researching every injury sustained in the NBA over the past few years, from the routine hamstring strains to the season-ending tears and ensuing surgeries.

After looking around at other injuries in other sports, they believe sports medicine across North America is behind other countries. Hence, the move to Moore, who most recently served as the United States Ski team’s strength and conditioning coordinator for the last six years. But Moore is Australian and was schooled there, previously training Australia’s alpine and mogul ski teams.

It’s an outside-the-box hire for a franchise not opposed to looking at things differently. The role of the athletic trainer has diminished in recent years — most now tape ankles and assist in treating injuries after they occur.

Significant injuries have plagued the Cavaliers the past few years. And while no one in the organization blames Benton for the injuries to Anderson Varejao, Kyrie Irving and others in recent years, the Cavs’ three most talented players (Irving, Varejao and Andrew Bynum) all have a long history of injuries and the Cavs are counting on all three if they’re going to make a playoff push this season in the Eastern Conference.

More changes
Trent Redden was promoted to assistant general manager and Koby Altman to director of pro player personnel. Redden has been with the Cavs since 2006, most recently as the director of college player personnel. Altman joined the Cavs last year as pro personnel manager.

The Cavs open training camp Tuesday.

Media Day was today & Kyrie has matured so much, just his leadership speaks volumes on the type of player he wants to become. I love our bigs, curious to see when the Russian assassin will get in the lineup because I think that was the steal of the draft. That boy Sergey is a different monster when it comes to shooting. I'm looking forward to see the improvement in Waiters as well. Kid's ceiling is up there, up there. Also, along the lines of the 3, don't be surprised to see Jack, Irving & Waiters on the floor at the same time w/ the bigs. So many matchup problems that can be created... I'm excited & Bynum is getting there. Took Bron his 3rd year to get in the playoffs, now it's Kyrie's time.

I'll get on Mike Brown later & why I think our O will be much different from his last stint here as coach & I appreciate this move because this team needed a defensive mind to take them to the next level

Clark and Bennett should both start as interchangeable 3's and 4s

Not sure, but i think Jack and Waiters should be the 2nd string backcourt.

Kyrie needs to have a knock down shooter next to him at the SG spot. Miles, or even one of the rookies might be a good look.

Varejao should start at Center until Bynum is ready to go

Varejao/Zellers
Clark/Thompson
Bennett/Gee
Miles/Waiters
Kyrie/Jack

Depending on the lineup but Earl Clark is the starting 3 & they want Bennett no where near the 3. He'll strictly be a 4 under Tristan.

Starting lineup:

Varejao/Bynum
Thompson
Clark
Waiters
Irving

That might be where they want him, but thats not where he wants to be. He's on record saying that he's a 3 and that he compares his game to melo's. The thing is, at Lebrons size most people would automatically assume he's a 4, like Bron. But he shot just under 38% from the 3, and in the 5 on 5's they've been having, everyone is impressed with his shooting touch.

Not saying he can't get do work at the 4, but he'll feast on these skinny ass 3s in the league, the same way melo does.

I'm not disputing any of this, I'm just saying you won't see him at the 3, at all. While they do love his shooting ability, this is a coaching staff based on defense & that's a scary sight for him trying to guard a 3. You won't see much of Gee, Clark will start & the mix between the 3 guard rotation & putting CJ at the 3 until Sergey can start is where they're headed. It's not like they haven't told Bennett where he'll be & he seems to be ok with it.

In all honesty, he's a minor piece in the big scheme of this team. He's another big that can contribute & if he becomes a #1 pick or a clear first rounder capable of playing, that's a bonus. We know what he is & if he's not a backup, that's a plus, basically.
