Back to Basics 1 was a really dope event. B2B2 was...forgettable. Damn near every battle was one-sided. The only two guys who really stepped up were Caddy Ron (who was on his shock bars game and had body of the night) and Only One (who raps really well...but has less focus on bars and more on rapping well). Of the match-ups that counted,
Diz sort of spazzed but was still on the sloppy delivery tip and managed to focus bars on Math, Organik, Daylyt, PH, his grandmother and the fans in a two round battle. His style sells really well against a Chilla but damn near all of his highlights were about other people.
Chilla had his moments but a disappointing performance after the Math battle where I thought he was able to hold his own even though the style clash favored Math.
Day vs Danja was Daylyt at his most average. Danja Zone did his thing, seemed like a clear win for him. Day was disappointing here.
JC vs Psycoses had my attention, but it's a pure style clash. I can see heads giving Psycoses the win because he throws flurries but where he had haymakers mixed in against Remy D, he didn't get the impact on his punches this time. He still does some things well and has potential but JC got that 2-1 or even 3-0 but not a body.
Remy D had a really great round in memory of PH. Chedda is a what you see is what you get cat. Weird battle because Remy went first and Chedda had to spit a typical round after the memorial bars for PH and it's hard to give Remy the win when he forfeited a round albeit for a great reason.
QP vs Bulletz was good. Bulletz has been surprisingly good lately (or I was just sleeping on him of past performances) and QP was vintage QP, pen game at a high level. That's the sleeper battle of the event. The crowd wasn't giving QP enough love (typical with his style) but overall, they both did their thing and did it well which is more than I can say for most of the match-ups.
I really like this series and the format because it lends itself to back and forth match-ups feeling like classics...but the battles have to be close. This time, putting up and comers against vets got most of the up and comers exposed and smashed on. They need more even match-ups rather than just throwing new guys to the wolves. The one vet to get smoked was Cutter and he's Cutter...he actually tried something new in his first but it flopped MISERABLY. It was a full round of a "so Organik hit me up" story...I mean, that's different, just not good at all.
