I'm from California.The old guard alternative rap movement was dead by the time Below The Heavens dropped. Blu spearheaded it's resurgence and it has now become commonplace in the westcoast scene. California alternative rap was not maintstream until Kendrick, who was directly influenced by Blu.
It wasn't dead whatsoever.
Just a three years before that Murs
dropped 3:16 which deals with
very similar topics and a year before
that he dropped Murray's Revenge.
Even outside of that the Cali underground scene and more specifically
the alt rap scene was already in or getting up to full swing with artists like TiRon, U-N-I, Kendrick, Fashawn etc. It's kinda ridiculous to attribute the "New West" to Blu
when truly it was a concerted effort.
Around this time (2007-2010) the east coast had a thing going to Phil Ade, Mickey factz, Theophilus London, Charles Hamilton, Wale and so on
