Listening to Ice Cube, Lethal Injection, driving over the Huey P. Long bridge and my phone got stuck in that lil space between the seat and console. Phone starts blowing up. Text messages phone calls everything. I had to wait until I got off the bridge and pull over into a convenience store parking lot to fish out my phone. Read them text messages and was like WTF. Turned on the radio & and started calling people back.

I was flipping through the channels and stopped on CNN right as the breaking news graphic came on. At that point it was just that he had been taking to the hospital because of cardiac arrest. Of course I stayed glued to news and internet waiting for any news. When they announced his passing it was a tremendous shock. If you’re an 80’s baby Mike was always on the radio, your older siblings had posters on the wall and probably owned a red leather jacket.

Even my parents who don’t speak much English cried when Mike died. He was a one of a kind global icon, I don’t think anyone has come close to that level of celebrity.

I was on my way out to get some food (Burger King) when I heard the news. There was a slight delay on radio picking it up but as I was driving around virtually every station started reporting it and playing his music. My mom was a wreck that entire week. Only other time I remember her reacting that way was when Aretha Franklin died a few years ago.

I was at varsity basketball camp. I was in 10th grade. The entire vibe shifted. We were scrimmaging at that point. It was half-hearted and dazed for the last 40 minutes. MJ's death really bothered me. I didnt realize how much I genuinely valued Michael until he was gone. My kids love him and the oldest was born in '17. He was special. I don't think we'll see anything like it again in our lifetimes.

I was leaving a doctors appointment and as soon as I stepped out of the building my phone started ringing and I was getting back to back texts. I picked up and my nephew asked me if I was watching the news. I told him that I wasn't even home and he said, "Michael Jackson died...'. I just stood where I was, in shock, and answered my phone for the next ~15 minutes while every contact (no lie; some people I hadn't heard from in years) in my phone called me to break the news. I remember not being able to get online for over 3 hours when I got home. Seeing Jermaine Jackson's press conference from the hospital that evening finally made it seem real to me.

Was chilling at home when news he was being rushed to the hospital came. My Mom was in the room and gave me this look like she had a bad feeling about it. My Bro then came downstairs and we waited.

Local news banner pops up "Michael Jackson Dies"

Best way to describe the feeling was like a seismic shift. I was stunned and me and my brother exchanged silent looks of disbelief and sadness.

What had me trippin was the local news anchors looking just as shook in real time, like they didn't believe what they were reporting either. Heard my Mom just saying "damn" and wiping tears. Horrible end to a difficult decade.

Crazy looking back on it now, time slowed to a standstill worldwide.
