The problem with this country is we have trade deals set up forcing us to compete with Chinese people who don't give a fukk about trashing their environment, working people like slaves, and mutating their children to make money. You can't win if those are the rules.

Could be. The biggest difference between China and the other "Asian tiger" economies like Japan, Taiwan, Singapore could be one of volume. Increasing any metric that's a ratio of X / 1,300,000,000 seems like it should take a while.
But then again, maybe they only need to get powerful enough to "exert influence" on the world enough to accelerate that process. China could conceivably be the world's preeminent military superpower long before it's average citizen has first world living standards.

I've watched enough about North Korea to see the similarities between them and this article about China. The abandoned shopping centers, ghost towns, pollution, poverty, the death penalties.

The real movers of China are the upper middle and rich classes that number in the 300 million. Everyone knows China is competitive in manufacturing due to its super low labor cost even relative to other professions.

History shows that might not be true. The one party state with a high amount of poverty means that China is ripe for some kind of massive social revolution. If the party can't evolve at the rate that society over there can evolve, the party and the China it created could be endangered.
The USA actually faces a similar issue. The wealth and socioeconomic gap is growing while the US political system isn't very representative with only 2 parties to rule the whole nation.
