America IS diverse.

In fact, its INCREDIBLY diverse.

No country is going to openly sit by and not try and push culture and image in a certain direction, but the fact that all of these elements do exist is a testament to how stable this country truly is.

And there was no baseline definition of diversity given in this thread...So I don't even know why you made it actually, cause if we're not talking about cultural diversity, then it doesn't need to be discussed at all...

first of all, us borders are far from threatened, so how do you need patriotism to protect them?

I'm not talking about defense. I'm talking about maintenance. Big difference.

Do you want the USA to shrink in size? Give up territory? Let states secede? I'm not even talking military bases, i'm talking actual parts of the country.

second, the national interest isn't necessarily the interest of it's people, it's the interest of those who rule.

in theory, it should be. I didn't say it always should be...but I think a lot of ya'll foget how much leeway the US and its associates have when it comes to getting their way around the world. I'd rather be the one throwing the weight than the one catching it.

patriotism is a tool that serves those who rule and allows them to delegitimize criticism.

if patriotism tells you that your country is the greatest nation on earth, it doesn't need improvement.

that way, you act out of a concern for your fellow men and not for the supposed good of the abstract concept of the nation state.

You can't escape that abstract concept because ultimately you have to accept that the Rio Grande River is the border between the US and mexico and everything north of that has to be protected if not by some shared stake in the land, but by some ideological concept of purpose or unity...I'd prefer the former over the latter...but the fact remains.

I think most American's haven't considered what its like to live in places with neighbors who have historically been existential threats. We live in a nation thats not only the 3rd largest, but is surrounded technically by pseudo-American's to the north, and poor people to the south and water on both sides.

Geographically, NO ONE is fukking with us.

We're diverse in every metric that matters for a country of 300M people.

I already posted the top 20 countries in terms of population...all of which are NOWHERE near as DIVERSE as the US.

Its hard to have a nation with that many people who come from such diverse backgrounds and still have a relatively stable nation like that.

Canada has 30M people, but they're diverse...Mexico has 100M+ but they're largely homoegenous.

Name a place with even 200M+ thats as diverse as the United States.
