Napster had gotten popular around this time. I had downloaded songs that I couldn't find for decades. In August 2001, my buddy had stopped through while I had these old songs playing on Napster in the basement. He tried to pretend he wasn't paying these songs he hadn't heard in decades any attention. Anyway, I told him I was having a little fight party later that night. He wounded up being two hours early, just so he could hear these old school songs I was playing...lol.

I had a another small gathering a few weeks later with just me, him, and a mutual friend. Btw, I had just brought a medium sizes sun-setter to go on my back deck that summer. I also bought the screen-room attachment. So I had put a tv in this sun-setter-screen room, so I could have fight parties and cookouts in my backyard. Me and my two buddies reminisced for at least three hours that night, while I had Napster playing, which became my new radio around this time. That was the last time I saw my buddy. He was killed in 9/11 at the Pentagon about a month later. However I did talk to him a week before 9/11. He had called to ask me if I was having the upcoming Hopkins vs Trinidad fight. That fight was going to be in New York, but it wounded up being postponed until later that month because of 9/11, plus his wife was pregnant with their first child. I wounded up having a full house that night for the Hopkins vs Trinidad fight, but without my buddy there, whose remains still hadn't been recovered, it felt as though I was watching that entire fight thru a glass wall, wearing dark shades, with the sound turned low.
Was he on flight 77 or working inside the Pentagon?

I was on the way to work and they locked base down. Had to do 100% accountability formation And in the AF that is a rare thing. I want to say by February I was on my first deployment in support of 101st strike brigade.

Having fun. Waking up, doing chores, then heading outside to play ball or chill. If I was inside I was playing StarCraft, Diablo, Nintendo shyt, etc.

During the summer it felt like I had a “home base” more than a house because I’d be gone for hours and only go back for water/food lol. Usually my mom was fine with this since I’d do my chores before leaving. But sometimes I had to sneak back into the house and get a drink, hoping my mom wouldn’t notice I was back and tell me to clean something up.

Watching a movie or TV felt like something you did as a cool down, after having your fun. Now it's all kids want to do - that or being online. The Recess movie came out that year, I think it came out on DVD that fall but I'm not sure. Either way we watched in the same way we watched most movies: at the end of the day, after playing outside nonstop, with popcorn/snacks. "Movie night is at 8PM." That's how we rolled.

Even with videogames I mainly wanted to play with friends. Most of the shyt I've learned about computers came from either trying to figure out how to play online with friends (before high speed internet), or trying to hide my porn history.

He was working inside the Pentagon. He had just got off the phone with his wife, talking to her about the 2nd attack on the World Trade Center. Shortly afterwards, his wife heard the Pentagon was hit. So she immediately called him back, but got his voicemail. Hearing his voice on the voicemail gave her the false impression he was ok. But she was still concerned, because he would have called her back immediately to tell her he was ok. So she called again, but this time she got an automated voice message. This was when she began to worry a little. That must have been around the time I tried to call him, because I too got an automated voice message not long after I heard what happen. Then when I called again, I got a busy signal.

To be honest, I was just calling to let him know I was concerned...because I never would have heard the end of it...lol. Plus the media didn't tell us about any casualties at first. They made it sound like the plane hit where there weren't too many people around. Then they reported 88 killed. I still wasn't too worried, because the likelihood of him being one of those 88 out of 23,000 was too slim for me to imagine. Then that number began to rise. Later after they sent us home, I called his wife, expecting her to say he was safe and sound. But she said she still hadn't heard from him either. So I called back around 6 pm, giving him time to explain to his wife what took him so long to call, not to mention he hadn't called me yet. But she still hadn't heard from him, She was very stressed out by this time, and her mother had told her to take a nap. So I called again around 9:00pm. This is when she told me he was listed as accounted for, and her relatives from out of town where she was from, were starting to come over.

I also had another very close buddy working there that day. He had helped renovated that area of the Pentagon. He was usually right were that plane hit. He would often see my deceased buddy working in his newly renovated office. But on the day the plane hit, he had gotten in to a heated argument with his supervisor. He was so mad, that Instead of reporting to that location, he took a 20 minute break. After his break, while he was walking towards that location, he heard the blast, and saw this huge transformer rolling a little towards him. He was one of the witnesses on the news clips, briefly explaining what he saw. I had to dampen his day further my letting him know that my buddy was one of the ones unaccounted for.

I have no words to explain the feeling I would have had, if I'd lost both of my best friends that day. I did know the one that was killed since I was 16, but the one who survived was just as close to me. He's not in very good health these days

It was the best summer of my youth hands down. Then Aaliyah died and it made me sad for awhile. I was down bad after that because I was in love with her.

:mjcry:
I remember going to see “Romeo must die” the year before in theaters with my mom and stepdad. I always knew Aaliyah and liked her music but I didn't realize how beautiful she was until seeing that movie ( I was on the verge of puberty) Walked out of their with a new celebrity crush :wow:. A couple years after that It was Beyoncé and Ashanti :wow:
