It's often been the case that heads always romanticize how good hip hop was back in the day. Always saying that the current music can't compare to what came before it.

But I believe the last few years have been a massive improvement over the majority of the 2000s.

I feel we're in an era where artists are finally taking advantage of the internet in terms of how they present their music. It's given a greater opportunity for artists to have their voices heard and the lines between mainstream and underground have become blurred as the record industry is on it's knees.

Everyone from legends to new artists have been releasing interesting music since 2010.

But before that ::huhldup:

Looking back 2003-2009 was some weak ass shyt.

Not to say there wasn't classic releases but every year seemed so barren. You'd be sitting around for months waiting for some new shyt to drop. There was a distinct lack of interesting new artists. The majority of the artists who defined the era were already 90s vets (Hov, 50, Eminem, Nas, Outkast, Wayne). The music was stale and lifeless.

Cats hadn't really figured out how to take advantage of the internet. The mixtape game was still sort in it's infancy. The underground was :flabbynsick:

I honestly believe we're in a great era right now and cats should appreciate it because coming up in the mid 2000s was rough. shyt was Ethiopian status with releases.

Now? The game is so much more eclectic. You want ignant trap shyt? You want hardcore boom bap? You want emo pop trash? You want Yeezy rapping about fukking bytches on molly over Strange Fruit/Hudson Hawk hybrid? Doesn't matter what you're into it, it's there for you.

coming up in the 2000s was awesome though lets be real

The point isn't to compare year by year but to look at how hip hop is much healthier right now than it was ten years ago.

There is a greater amount of variety, of new artists and releases right now.

Yeah '04 might've had a few dope albums but all in all it was directionless, mediocre music.

How is hip hop healthier now compared to 10 years ago when

  • Majority of artists sound like just a slight variation of each other
  • Everybody feels like they can rap even if they are garbage
  • The bar has been lowered as to what is acceptable and what's not
  • And last but not least, sales are waaaaaaay down

And don't even get me started with More variety of artists right now. There was way more variety around 03/04 compared to now. Lets not forget, There were still a lot of regional sounds back then which provided enough variety for the listener. Now?? :heh:

And a bunch of underrated classics came out between 2003-2006.

I will say this though; 2012/ 2013 has way better then 08-10. Those were the worst years as far as quality music is concerned.

But aint nothin more directionless than nikkas who pretty much sound the same and bring nothing fresh to the table.

But I'm just a fan:yeshrug:

It really was.

Just spoke about this the other day. I think '02-'06 was some rough shyt for Hip Hop. I don't know what happened, but the music took a serious decline by way of quality.

sadly, i'd take 2007-2009 over this new decade.

I didn't think it could get any worst, but it actually did. this is by far the worst era.

@ROFL_GUY, how can any nikka say that a time period where we witnessed G-Unit in its prime was terrible. I didnt even bring out the Gunit singles on these nikkas.

Outside of a few releases I couldn't agree more

Sure we were introduced to 50, Kanye, Jeezy, Lupe, MF Doom but to me the bad outweighed the good in that era

such a great timeperiod of this planet :ohlawd:

craz you posted breathe that might be my favorite song of the 2000's

2003-05 had so much classic music so many variations of hip-hop so many regions :ohlawd: these sissy kids dont realize how much qaulity was put out and it also came in quantity and it was coming from EVERYWHERE and nothing sounded the same like \how its been the last 5yrs.. everyone back than didnt followa a generic bp like today of trying to maufacture hit records.. and everydamn artist soundin alike with the same production and style.. fom 03-05 really should go back from 2000-05 thats how i look @ that era and it all DIED after 05.. 2006-09/10 was the WORST ERA IS HIP-HOP HISTORY, the last 2 1/2 years its been steadily improving but nothing like it used to be

2003

:ohlawd::ohlawd::ohlawd::ohlawd:

theres so many more but look @ how many fukkin GREAT albums were all dropped in 1 year everone was :eat: and was able to stay true to themselves and put out the music out how they really wanted it to sound they wernt handicapped by the indusrty because everything was pushin units from lyrical rap to party music and they all had distinct sounds they wernt forced to follow a particular sound or bp to a "hit" album/song

the mixtape scene of the mid-2000s alone trumps the past 7 years of hip-hop's existence.

im talking real mixtapes. not this fictitious computer-manipulated buzz bullchit.
