There’s no 200k Job in advertising besides ceo, or cfo, or c something.

I don’t believe you’re making 200k, I work in advertising, that’s not believable.

Isn't advertising heavily commission based? If so, then top earners can hit that # I'm sure then.

What kind of jobs do you guys work?

I’m a consultant, some of these jobs/contracts move quick because the organisation doesn’t want all that red tape associated with hiring full time staff.

Also you missed the part where my resume had references that were my homies or me using an alternate number.

My academic qualifications are bachelor/undergrad. It’s not like I wrote Harvard. I’m just another average guy which lets me fly under the radar in my opinion. More than anything I’m personable and easygoing so i doubt I set off any alarms (back then).

It’s been a while since I had to blatantly lie as I’ve already put in the work

See even this sounds sus to me. Now all I can speak of is where I work (county job), but I know HR here would never let someone get away with listing your homie as a reference. You can’t just say "Reference: Steve Smith (phone number)" you need to list the person, their company and their title, and HR will likely attempt to verify that.

Same with schooling... it's so easy to verify someone's degree online now. You can do it in like 5 minutes. So again, I'm not seeing how a reputable company is letting these things slide.

Maybe you found the perfect situation where it all came together for you breh, but I dunno. It's a sticky situation though. The last company I worked at, I know for a fact they did NOT check a few things on my resume... BUT I remember when new management came in, they went through everyone's backgrounds and verified everything and if I had been lying about anything at that point, I would have gotten murked.

If you are a good senior technical programmer they will sometimes just tech interview you and that will largely be it. They don't care so much about your qualifications at that stage of your career as much as they care about what you know. There are many many cases of tech wizards with no degree qualifications and so qualifications are routinely ranked under demonstrable skill. Grad entry / management track / milk round consultancy recruitment type positions are different and other professions like law/accounting etc are different. Technical / sales type careers where ability is primary and lack of ability becomes quickly evident are not as hung up on what you have done 'years ago' and are more focused on what extra-value-added contribution you can make TODAY.

A French/Iranian friend of mine left school at 17 and by 19 was running major tech projects at investment banks getting > 200K p/a as a consultant.

I'm not denying that you can get a great job without a degree but I am questioning getting a greatjob while LYING about a degree.

I agree a lot of places don't correlate degree = job success, but they do want to see that you at least COMPLETED school and got your degree because it shows initiative and that you can complete a task and blah blah all that BS.

That’s your company. You’d be surprised not all companies do a proper reference check. If they did I’d have already chosen someone who I’ve found at that company and made sure my role was under them (direct report). I honestly didn’t put much thought into it when I started but over time you find minute things you need to change to pull it off.

I’ve been asked for my transcript once when I was lying about gpa

Usually degree is not listed on my resume, I have 2 resumes 1 with education 1 without. . It doesn’t matter. I have commercial achievements ie real world situations making companies realdollars. Neither myself nor clients or employers care if I’ve studied because I can do what I say I canplus I have a track record of commercial results. You can’t put a degree against results. Degrees are theory, i’m tried & tested

yeah my wife tells me they are doing background checks on EVERYTHING to verify employment history. I'm not sure how u get around that.
Brehs. I started this years ago. I now have the qualifications and real references. However I’m sure I could do this again from scratch in today’s environment

Op is correct. The higher the position the less scrutiny your resume and past gets. I have a college diploma yet im in mangement. I routinely interview MBA and other masters degree holders, lol.

Might depend on your industry. No one on top in my industry could get away with it...most of the top positions are networked and positions changes either in house or from one organization to another tend to be choreographed with other moves and changes - the scrutiny isn't less, just people already know 'he went to xxxx undergrad and yyyyy grad school; unless you've published something or done great research, it's hard to make it up to that level. No one is just finessing their way into a $200k payday. The industry is small too, so if you claimed to have worked somewhere else, cutthroat people will do the research. If you make up a company people WILL emphasize that they've never heard of it...

So, props if you can get away with this, but I know you can't in my industry. It's too niche.

It was finesse at the start. Now I know my shyt. Finesse got me in the door and led to my $850 a day role. Which led to my next gig
