What's the hope though? People compare him to Russell Wilson, but he's about the same size, immature, makes more mistakes, takes hits, just a tad worse of a passer, slower, yet he would go #1 and someone like RW goes in the 3rd round. Makes no sense to me

Same reason they hyped Tebow. They looking for that one. Their version of Mike Vick. The "new generation of QB". If you look around all of the QBs they currently say that about are black. Luck is just as mobile as Cam/RG3/Russ, but they already tagged him with the pocket QB label.

I try to see what folks claim they see about how he's going to be something special, but I can't. You can't be that reckless and arrogant with the ball unless you got a Favre level cannon. Now we're seeing he isn't as fast as they claimed either. There's other QBs about the same size that threw the ball better than him (Case Keenum on the Texans being one of them) in college.

I thought we were talking about as prospects:ufdup:

Johnny Manziel is a better prospect than Russell Wilson was coming out of college two years ago. It doesn't mean he's gonna be a better pro at all:manny:
Russ was a 3rd rounder, while Manziel is proabably a 10 pick. Obvious Manziel is getting way more hype. But people are giving him all this hype based on what Russ has done as a pro. And Manziel will be a complete trainwreck in the NFL.

A tenth of a second is a lot of time in a 40 not just a tad bit. Manziel played in a pass heavy system that the coach catered to his strengths in a conference that struggles with mobile QBs meanwhile Russ played in a run heavy system in a run heavy conference with conservative coaches. Russ' ability was hidden by the system he was in. I'm far from being on the RW bandwagon too.

Ima FSU fan.....did you not see RW at NC State? His numbers and production were very average. That's part of the reason he was a 3rd rounder. If he performed at NC State like he did at Wisconsin, he'd have been drafted much higher

I don't get the hate for Manziel. His 40 time wasn't all that, but his cone and shuttle drills were elite and would have ranking fairly high even with RB/WR's. Pretty much proved that the guy is extremely quick in small spaces, which is his calling card.

Was he reckless with the ball in college, sure...but he had to press. Anyone that has watched A&M last year knows that if JM didn't make plays regardless of the situation, that team would crumble within the quarter.

I think he's going to do just fine in the NFL provided they can put a team around him. I'm excited to see him play.

Any safety worth taking at the 10 spot for the Lions? Free safety to be exact

Not really but Detroit can reach for Pryor or Clinton Dix.

Scouting is much more than numbers and production. That said, Wilson was very accurate and efficient in college. He had good pocket poise, tangibles and playmaking ability. This is CBS' scouting report of Wilson:

Accuracy: Was the nation's most efficient quarterback in 2011, earning a 191.78 QB rating
-- over 22 points higher than the next highest rated QB from a pro-style offense (Andrew Luck) … Showcased the ability to consistently throw receivers open versus single coverage as a senior, demonstrating impressive improvement in this area from his time at NC State.
Delivers a tight spiral that is easily tracked and caught. Typically hits his receivers in stride whether on zipped crossing routes, touch passes dropped over the top of defenders or line drives leading receivers out of bounds on the deep out.

Arm Strength: Arguably Wilson's most impressive trait, especially considering his lack of ideal size. Can easily make every NFL throw, showing the ability to drive the football to the sideline on a line from the opposite hash. Can send the ball 40-50 yards downfield with a flick of his wrist.

Setup/Release: Efficient set-up and delivery of the ball. Experienced taking snaps from under center and shotgun. Drops back quickly and shows good rhythm and timing despite limited experience playing with Wisconsin's receivers, planting his back foot and driving the quick slant. Has a quick, over the top release and does an excellent job of finding clear passing lanes from which to throw.

Reading Defenses: Cerebral quarterback who is rarely fooled by coverage. Makes strong pre-snap reads and demonstrated improvement as a senior in manipulating the defense with his eyes and legs. Shows good poise in a muddy pocket, stepping up to avoid the rush and challenging linebackers to either commit to stopping him from scrambling or dropping off to cover receivers behind them. Is more than willing to scramble but does a nice job of keeping his eyes downfield until the last possible second.

On The Move: Very good elusiveness and speed for the position but his most impressive trait may be his vision. Anticipates pressure well and does a nice job of forcing the defense to commit and taking advantage of the weakness exposed once they do. Very good mobility for bootlegs and roll outs, showing good accuracy and arm strength to fire passes
downfield.
