this doesn't change anything what i'm saying. But as it appears, we can have some control over our stimuli. Deciding on what to believe, and curbing certain instincts...this in turn translates to the complexity of our consciousness. So it'd be interesting to see how this ability relates to the way our neurons work, if at all.
nah, not reallyyes and the conscious control of those responses is consciousness...
Whats the difference between taking mind altering drugs that affect neuronal transmission and...self inflicting changes in stimuli?

its STILL a response to stimuli, even if you can alter some aspects of it.

I don't know the answer to this, but I think its somewhat hard to presume that the number of neurons de facto relates to how complex the species is. At least between closely related species.
Then most likely I'm asking the wrong question then. Now, I wonder what's the closest animals to us in terms of neurons and how much different we are from them. Heck, I wonder how we developed the most neurons in the first place.

complexity is a weird thing because it doesn't necessarily mean "more able" or "better" as many times, other species just have varying degrees of their OWN complexitySo then what is our complexity due to exactly? I think that question is the basing for mine and @LeyeT 's musings.
Beautiful. But cats are too stupid and think it has something to do with aborted fetuses
nah, not really

Protein.

I just think its useful to not use the human experience as the standard in that regard
Just because words are in dictionaries doesn't mean they maintain their relevance with the latest science.what is your definition of consciousness?
all human beings possess consciousness according to this definition:
con·scious·ness
ˈkän(t)SHəsnəs/
noun
- the state of being awake and aware of one's surroundings.
"she failed to regain consciousness and died two days later"
- the awareness or perception of something by a person.
plural noun: consciousnesses
"her acute consciousness of Mike's presence"- the fact of awareness by the mind of itself and the world.
"consciousness emerges from the operations of the brain
