He's legit being set up to fail.

Watching him last week was flat out depressing. He had no time at all.

Lovie Smith also isn't the best coach on the offensive side either.

Exactly. It was a fools gold situation vs Tennessee's.

Everyone will compare them as QB's based on their success in rebuilding two franchises, but where they got drafted were completely different in terms of scenarios.

Tennessee was a team with a bad record who a legit QB can turn around. They got one along with a beast WR and one of the greatest Defensive Coordinators of all-time. Their roster is also full of beasts from their RB to their defensive front 7 and one of the more reliable offensive lines in the league.

Tampa Bay is a legit bad team with two good WR's, a solid defensive-minded coach, and......................................................

People are going to be stuck on the Jameis vs Mariota debate, but it's really about Jameis' situation vs Mariota's situation.

Just hope Jameis doesn't take much punishment this season. They're going up against a lot of teams who are going to blow up his offensive line.

Much of the Tampa Bay's problems come from the coach they have, Lovie Smith. Analyses I've read say that offensive-minded coaches turn offenses around more quickly and more effectively than defensive-minded coaches. Black QBs like Jameis, along with Cam Newton, EJ Manuel and Geno Smith, have all been straddled with head coaches that play not to lose, rather than to win like Whisenhunt. The irony of course is that these black QBs most need offensive coaches and offensive minded people to supplement their game and develop, but are the least likely to get that support. Oppositely, for whatever reason owners seemingly don't put as much into black QBs as they do non-black ones. Only the black QBs who defy all the odds against them, like Wilson, succeed. The rest of QBs literally have to swim against the current.

no its not, its just waiting to get picked, which it nearly was

The throw is a good one, actually. The player defending Mettenberger's target is turned away from Mettenberger, meaning the chances of the ball getting picked off are low. Similarly the zone defender would have to make a spectacular one-handed catch to make the interception, which is unlikely. At worst the throw is an incompletion and at best it's a TD.

a defender with slightly faster reaction jumps the route and gets a pick or gets a deflection that can be a disaster

nikkas fascination with 'thread the needle' throws is hilarious :heh:

You have to thread the needle at times to win games. Could Mettenberger have drawn the zone defender the wrong way with his eyes or a pump fake? Sure, but the red zone is a constricted zone and Mettenberger has a cannon so the risk of interception drops even further. It was a good situational throw that NFL QBs have to make.

Aaron Rodgers has throws like that all the time. I don't think anyone is discrediting him for it.
arod throws extremely few interceptable balls. if the ball clears the defender by 4 feet its one thing. throwing a needle is by definition a super risky pass. arod rarely if ever throws risky passes

no you dont
remind me how many thread the needle throws brady threw in the superbowl ?

in 2015, a thread the needle throw is a negative play. its an unnecessary risk that mostly braindead qbs like stafford/cutler still do.
