They insured themselves against an unpredictable future. That's the point of these long term deals. At some point,it becomes impractical to gamble money you do need for excess profits you don't need.
If you see this as "losing money" you should be criticizing the agents signing deals now too when the market suggests the cap is going to keep going up.
