Of course race is important. But I think the issue is (or at least my issue) is this: is race being used to cover for other awful policies? Do we think putting a black face on destructive economic policy is a good result? Is it about eliminating bigotry or just climbing the levers of power?
Entirely possible it can be, just as class can be used to hide racial animosity.

I didn't hear Obama use the word criminal, authoritarian, fascist, or anything really even close to that which could be construed as a "pure attack". The only times he directly addressed or referenced Trump were to say:

So his criticism of Trump is basically that he is lazy and narcissistic. Which is very standard, tepid mainstream Democratic fare over the past 4 years.

And I didn't really see any stark warning in his speech either. I think the only thing he said about what's at stake is:

Which is a very nebulous platitude.

The best, most enlivening moments of the speech were when he glanced at the underlying rot endemic to the entire American project by detailing the injustices and brutalities faced by marginalized people across the history of this nation, but he couldn't go the whole way with that sentiment and complete the circle because his history and ideology won't allow him to make a comprehensive and fully-righteous condemnation of the status quo.

I don't know, a lot of the exuberant reactions I'm seeing in response to this speech reminds me of Drake stans hyping up his weak diss tracks during the Pusha beef. :yeshrug:

Hold on. Obama accuses his successor of being a threat to democracy, and trying to rig the election...and your hot take is that this is some ho hum shyt that doesn't matter?
:hhh:

For some reason, red meat makes people's dikk hard. It is cool and all but honestly, just give it to me straight. Trump is a threat to democracy. We have been saying that here and hopefully elsewhere. I'm glad that he used his platform to state that because if we don't take care of this democracy thing, none of the other shyt is going to matter. First things first.

Going through this thread over the past day and seeing the reactions of both Kamala and Obama’s speeches shows that dems need to Be romanticized in order to give credit, agree or be persuaded. GOP fall the fukk in line. Trump can mumble bullshyt and lie for an hour and MAGAts and TLRepublicans would be like :wow::blessed: “he shut shyt down”

the purity politics some you cats asking for now is unable to be achieved without a wide coalition of people. If you don’t appeal to the majority of dems then you will not be elected. Bernie and liz are all on board and you got dumbasses on twitter still criticizing. Smh you can’t win with y’all. Guess you’d be satisfied with another 4 years of this fat bytch were he makes it impossible to implement progressive policies in the near future :scust:

That is what people want, I want him/her to be speaking to me and I hate that shyt. This isn't just about you. What people fail to realize is that your perfect candidate is you. No one candidate is going to hit every box you maintain but you. These are all give and take relationships to build these coalitions. A little bit of this, a little bit of that, taking the best from everyone and everywhere to be stronger overall. However, for the life of me, I can't see why we are fighting when we are looking at a united front of xenophobic, racist people hellbent on making laws not apply to them and to fukk over the rest. This election is a call to fukking arms. If you don't understand the alarm in all of this, you will forever be lost.

Unity.
Return to functional government.
He will tout the wide range of speakers from Republicans to Progressives show he's inclusive.
Will call out Trump's incompetence.
May likely reference the sheer number of criminals around him as examples of why he isn't fit to hold the office.

Saying "Trump is a threat to democracy" isn't some profound statement anymore, it's just a basic fact that has been hammered into our heads every day over the past 4 years. And he never actually accused Trump of trying to rig the election. The closest he ever got to that claim was "So they're hoping to make it as hard as possible for you to vote, and to convince you that your vote doesn't matter." which coincidentally gives him juuust enough wiggle room to avoid controversy. Which is my whole point about Obama's ideology, demeanor and speeches. By his very nature, he's just gunshy about taking principled, moral stands that aren't already popular in the mainstream. I can't think of one issue he's been out on the edge of public opinion on. His specialty is saying things we all know to be true, but in a very polished manner. He still deeply believes in "they go low, we go high". But hey, if that's what gets you off, go nuts. I'm not trying to harsh anyone's vibes, if you love it I like it. :hubie:

There's nothing outside of advocating for fullscale revolution that would impress these dudes. :shaq2:

:unimpressed:

Bernie didn't call for fullscale revolution in his speech but he didn't shy away from actually calling Trump an authoritarian, a fraud, saying Trump is serving the oligarchy, and actually saying Trump is rigging the election by undermining the Postal Service. Those are all words you can ctrl-f and find in the transcript of Bernie's speech, no need to decipher subliminals, he threw the shots at him. But that's going low to Obama, so he doesn't do it.

Yeah, thank god Obama said "Trump doesn't take the job seriously" and he "treats the Presidency like a reality show to get attention". Those were some fastballs he was throwing there. Lord knows if he hadn't gone there, no one else would have. Never would have heard that message anywhere else, I tell you what. Barack really gave it to us straight. :whew:

That’s exactly why Bernie is at where he’s at.
