We’ve never had a prior president criticize the president in office. Like never, It’s unprecedented. What do you expect to happen? Obama has to go about this the right way to try to show 2016 trump voters what’s at stake without alienating them. He also has to pull citizens that didn’t vote last time.

At this stage, we can definitively say Twitter reaction is virtually irrelevant. Zero correlation with polling numbers and trends at large.

I'd be more interested in FB reaction actually.

Election 2020: Kamala Harris is a hit with voters so far - CNNPolitics
at this point, anyone who actually wants to beat trump but is unhappy with kamala is just clowning

is she perfect, no. but she's experienced, young, appeals to a wide range of people, and she's not the actual nominee. at the end of the day, she's just a supplement to the biden campaign. she's a fine pick

This put it best:

People need to stop taking internet nihilists seriously. They're not even the people who (could possibly) sit at home on election night.

Yeah, thank god Obama said "Trump doesn't take the job seriously" and he "treats the Presidency like a reality show to get attention". Those were some fastballs he was throwing there. Lord knows if he hadn't gone there, no one else would have. Never would have heard that message anywhere else, I tell you what. Barack really gave it to us straight. :whew:

I don't get your sarcasm. Obama addressed the threat of Trump, and by extention the threat to America as a whole, from the position of an elder statesman.

He eloquently and clearly articulated this while still giving dignity to the office of the president. It simply is not a needle Bernie has to thread, because has he never had to deal with the weight of the presidency. So comparing the two is silly. Both did exceptionally well in their space.

If you wanted Obama to get into a mudslinging match with Trump it does nothing but bring Obama down, and indeed, this is what Trump wants, a pig fight. I think telling Trump he failed to grow into the role of president is a devastating blow to a sociopath like Trump. Such a simple statement but it exposes his inadequacies in clear and concise terms to the American people.

Even if you don't feel Trump is a crook, (which white privilege will excuse ) you might not disagree based on all that's happening, that he is in over his head.

Sure, I get that. But these are unprecedented times, so I would have liked to see Obama match the moment and talk that existential talk, but that's not in his wheelhouse. It is what it is.

I don't think you pull citizens that didn't vote last time by trotting out lines of attack bounded by what makes MSNBC viewers comfortable.

I don't believe Obama adequately addressed the threat of Trump at all. I don't even believe Obama fully grasps the true threat that Trump poses. I think a lot of the people responding to me are mistakenly thinking I wanted Obama to be more crass or mudsling-y with Trump. What I wanted was for Obama to drop his Sorkinian veneer of "This is not who we are we're better than this, when they go low we go high, Trump is simply not up to the task" and get real. This isn't a movie, this isn't a TV show, this is real life. Trump is out here murdering people and the guys we sent to stop him are busy looking in the mirror rehearsing their press conference speeches.

Retaining the "dignity" of the office seemed to be Obama's paramount concern, and he was able to do so, but at the expense of urgency and authenticity. Can't appear panicked, can't appear worried, always cool and in charge, never let the people see behind the curtain. Like, who exactly is "Trump failed to grow into the role" a devastating blow to? Who is moved by that line? Surely not Trump (and even if he is boiling mad at Obama for saying that, who gives a fukk, far too many people have taken making Trump mad a symbol of progress or some shyt). Surely not any of his supporters. Surely not any of the people who are disenfranchised or don't give a fukk about politics. So that leaves the mainstream CNN/MSNBC Democrats who tried making Drumpf a thing and have been locked in an echo chamber repeating that same critique of Trump to themselves for the past 4 years. Same class of people who think Trump's biggest crime is being mean on twitter and ruining the prestige of the Presidency, who buy into the fairy tale of America as a fundamentally good place where decent men sagely rule over us. A line like that is really just saying "Trump has disappointed me because he's too crass and boorish, ruining the image of the Presidency I had in my head." It's saying "I hate Trump because he makes me think about politics, I prefer Presidents like Obama who I can trust to make good decisions for me, allowing me to set-it-and-forget-it." It confuses a President for a King, which is what these people really want; to be ruled and left alone to buy shyt and entertain themselves. The American political mind is just totally and completely atrophied and Obama is a quickening chemical in that process.

But what the fukk do I know, I though Elizabeth Warren was clearly the best candidate for President so I'm clearly way out of touch with what people think they need or want.

Stop being divisive, you're being an agent, do you want Trump to win, this is just negativity for no reason, why even bring this up right now, so what you're not gonna vote for Joe is that what you're saying, etc etc etc :coffee:

I hear all that. I just think there's a certain cynicism in your replies that colours your opinion more than it should. You sound burnt out.

Honestly no need to be sorry, if you tired you aren't alone. Keep reading and learning. Based on what I see you are a asset to the discussions. Recharge and come again.
