Well obviously, his message resonates with young women of color as shown through the support from them. If you look at the full response from his interview with the NY Times he acknowledges that not all Trump supporters are not going to buy into message of solidarity universal class struggle but that it's worth attending to and not neglecting the hardships of their poverty either. The point is, what can he or any politician do to make white people stop feeling racist? If we acknowledge that black people more than any other group of people have been the victims of exploitative capitalism one of the most effective ways to combat that struggle is focusing on people's day to day material needs.
The other question is, why is Bernie the only candidate singled out for this when he's put more radical legislation out their for the black community than anyone this side of Marianne Williamson? His marijuana legislation has social justice at the forefront favoring black and brown communities that have been the most disproportionately affected by its illegality. His prison reform bill exonerates among other things gives friggin voting rights to incarcerated people whom are disproportionately black. Also investing 15 billion dollars in HBCU's. Their is no indication that his empathy for all poor people neglects his having a targeted agenda for the black community.
