Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
I’m gone jump into this one. I like Bernie. But i am concerned that if he gets the nomination, black interest will be placed at the back of the line. At least with Biden and Steyer black people can hold their feet to the fire to extract specific goals. I have no confidence Sanders would make any efforts to address systemic racism head on. At all. If he wins the nomination of course I’m supporting, but Sanders has continued to turn himself in knots to not make any specific policy goals related to black people during this campaign.

I understand this position. But I don't understand why it seems to typically be directed soley at Sanders.

This question seems like a euphamism for reparations. But non of the candidates have a plan for that.

Part of Sanders' platform is the following:

  • Make all public and private HBCUs, tribal colleges, and many MSIs tuition-free
  • Invest $10 billion to create and expand HBCU medical, dental, and teacher training graduate programs
  • Invest $5 billion in HBCU infrastructure grants and cancel all institutional HBCU loan debt from the Capital Financing Program
  • Double Title III and Title V funds to decrease the funding gap between HBCUs and MSIs and predominantly white institutions
  • Issue an Executive Order that strengthens the White House Initiative on HBCUs to eliminate racial disparities in our college education system
Supporting HBCUs and MSIs
Just so that I am clear on your expectations from your ideal presidential candidate. What are the specific Black interests and concerns that you'd like to hold Steyer, Biden, or anyone to?

what specific policies are Biden and Steyer touting that Sanders isn't?

He's the 2nd most realistic candidate to help us win and keep the senate. I'm more concerned about Bernie's policies alienating ll states like Virginia and middle of America.
Virginia literally expanded Medicaid last year. And Clinton lost Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, and Missouri. It wasn't Bernie's policies that alienated them; It was the opposite. Not supporting the policies they wanted swung the election to Republicans.

I'm asking because I don't know. I haven't heard her speak on it.

In what ways is Ms. Warren addressing black issues head on?
She's very direct whenever the issue if race comes up. She breaks down how policy for farmers will specifically help AA farmers etc etc.

I'm sorry, breh. But she didn't offer any Black specific solutions. It's the same "rising tide lifts all boats" type of thing that people hold against Bernie when it comes to the Black community

The only specific thing that she mentioned was HR40...which Sanders also supports

If she was that direct, then why was Steyer the only one mentioning reparations. In fact, has she ever said was she for [actual, not the study of] reparations during any of the debates?

So Steyer has stepped out with very specific proposals chiefly reparations. (I know it’s not going to happen but putting on the agenda pushes the movement forward). Biden has no proposals that impress me but if he wins, it will be solely due to the black vote. And while he will not have many of the progressive policy goals specific to black people that I see from Warren, he will be beholden to the black politicians and groups who supported/endorsed him.

I love Bernie’s progressive ideals but he has done little to fill in the “how”. In addition his response to a lot of the race specific questions tend to be “My plan works for all people/I don’t see color” So his catch all prescriptions for issues in the country don’t do much to redress how racist policies have harmed black people in the country.

I have to admit, my biggest worry about Bernie is what kind of downballot effect he'll have on other Dems

Even if they agree with his policies I can see Dems in swing districts being hesitant about associating with the whole socialist label. Hopefully antipathy toward Trump overrides that sort of thing.

It'l be awkward if a bunch of Dems are all "I support Bernie, but I'm not a socialist tho :whoa: "

Warren’s housing plan has specifics geared toward increasing black home ownership and she has a plan for black maternal mortality...Bernie doesn’t even speak to black women - I absolutely don’t feel any recognition from him as one of the truest bluest demographics of the Democratic Party, and his attack dog Nina sanders does nothing to bridge that gap.

as for what I’d like to see, every candidate seems to think black education plan = hbcu’s while letting affirmative action continue to get raped and decimated, so I’d like to see more of them speak on applying pressure from a federal level to all public schools to strengthen AA
