why are yall all bringing up teams that would've made the playoffs pretty much each of the past 25 seasons?
It's cool until somebody makes the playoffs at like 79-83 and knocks out a 95 win ball club. Then yall will move the goalposts back to "the regular season is too long and doesn't matter"
yea, there was really no reason to expand past the 1 wild card team. That scenario is gonna happen sooner than later.

This argument is dumb as hell because the shyt teams that get in are always division winners in historically bad divisions since their records would never be good enough to snag a wild card, even in an expanded wild card situation.
If your argument is to get rid of divisions and just take the top six teams by record, okay, but arguing against a third wild card due to this scenario makes zero sense.

They only had 2 divisions in each league and 28 teams total.
In 1994 they split the divisions into 3 per league.. but they went on strike that year and there was no post season. In 1995 they had two rounds. ALDS and ALCS. And if stayed like that until they added the wild card.
Yeah, the Braves were in the NL West which is wild. That 1993 season was the last of that foolishness.
But that’s why folks really did celebrate when they made the playoffs.

The 2014 Brewers were 82-80
The 2015 Giants were 84-78
The 2017 Rays/Angels/Royals were 80-82
All of these teams would've been in the playoffs under the current format in the past 10 years. In the same time span, only 4 teams have won 90+ games and NOT made the playoffs.
A 3rd wild card will inevitably result in some trash ass team playing in October in the near future and arguing for it just so a team that couldn't finish in the top third of its league has a shot at a title makes zero sense.

But even assuming we have a year where there are only four good teams in either the NL or AL and a trash team gets in on the back end, that will be rarer than the seasons where a 90+ win team doesn't get in by your own tiny-ass sample size. It's a trade-off everyone but the goofs who think that things were better when most teams' seasons were over by the end of July will take.

Yes there will be a couple trash teams in the playoffs at some point but not as often as the NBA format. 12 teams is perfect expansion. Same amount as the NFL.
