“The sighting of the Moon signifies the start & the end of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims across the world will soon begin scanning the night sky for the first glimpse of a crescent moon, heralding the start of Ramadan.”

Just read this on another site. Is it true that the moon signifies the start and end of Ramadan? :ohhh:

Never heard of this before. Do you guys look to the moon during Ramadan or is this something just “traditional” not really practiced? :jbhmm:

Each and every month is lunar in character, not only the fast-month of Ramaḍan.

This would explain the importance of the crescent moon in Islam then… or just the Moon in general. For example Muhammad “splitting” the Moon

Do any modern Jewish holidays/practices revolve around the sighting/movement of the moon?

The moon's phases are intimately linked to every aspect of our calendar; if you look toward the evening sky just after sunset on any Rοsh Ħοdesh you will see the crescent new moon setting in the west, so that the Jewish months are still in-step with the new moon.

Pesaħ coincides with the full moon while Rοsh Ħοdesh (a minor festival heralding the first of each month) coincides with the crescent new moon. Linguistically, the word for the moon (יָָָָרֵֵֽחַַ yaréaħ) is closely related to one of the Hebrew names for a month (יֶֶֽרַַח yéraħ).

The most common word for a month, however, is
חֹֹֽדֶֶֶֶשׁ ħοdesh and this word literally means 'renewal'. The use of a word for month that denotes renewal is a clear indication that our months are to be lunar in character, each commencing when the moon is in its 'new' phase.
