As someone who regularly attends, I agree that it has lost its luster. I honestly think between the NFL and NBA, both have outlived its usefulness. It was supposed to show people who otherwise couldn't watch these stars get to see them on a big stage. We see them all the time now. The idea that "ooh he can make a name for himself this weekend" is kinda done. I saw it slowly turn as far back as when the game was in NYC and people were choosing SNL40 over the game that night. I also think the players getting a whole week off made players wish they didn't have to go to ASW. You can go to some remote location from Thursday to Wednesday and rest up and live in paradise or spend 3 days answering questions about tanking and legacy while also essentially networking the whole weekend. NBA ASW is basically NBA-Con. It's Comic-Con if you forced the actors to reenact "Avengers, Assemble!"

Nothing can impress us as fans anymore and the players kinda know that now so they just wanna get through their commitments, fly somewhere for 48 hours of whatever and gear up for the stretch run. It sucks but I don't blame any one thing. Nobody has the heart to dead it altogether, name the all-star teams, let everyone reset for a week and move on, but that might be the best thing.

A bunch of all-stars have already backed out. Luka and Ant are barely gonna play. You might get a couple of guys who really wanna get after it tomorrow (THAT is how you can build yourself up among fans now, treat it like a real game) but otherwise halfway through we're gonna wonder why we're watching this.

Pretty much spot on

The primary purpose of All Star Weekend in 2026 is to essentially be a networking convention for the NBA and its sponsors. You look at all these panels & events that are going on, most of them are tied to business opportunities. It’s capitalism baby :manny:

Tickets are priced so high that regular fans from the city can’t even really enjoy it. Players would rather be in the Bahamas.

Also social media & accessibility killed the appeal of “You get to see your favorite players interact with each other”. Just like in music & movies, our society doesn’t really make stars that feel larger than life anymore.

ok cool.

now guess what, i expected nba saturday night to be on saturday night.

shocking i know.
were you expecting the NBA to take precedence over the Winter Olympics?

Now, the Saturday night stuff was an adjustment because TNT would normally have it on Saturday night no matter what. They didn't have to worry about any other programming. NBC does.

As fans we've gotta accustomed to certain things and now that it's changing we're struggling, especially older heads.

Next year, it'll be back to normal and we'll find something else to complain about.

the difference between this and say Fanatics Fest in NYC is that the players play a game afterwards.

i understand it

but it is bad for the sport if NBC gonna treat it like a stepchild.

on TNT it was treated like the main event.

as far as I am concerned NBA on NBC has not restored the feeling of the 90s like people thought it would with the return of the theme song.

I am becoming more of a casual for all sports as my real life goes on (kids and shyt) but idk NBA feels like it is slipping away in a real way that I never thought would when basketball is my favorite sport.

that shyt yesterday is like bottom of the bottom of the reasons why, but i guarantee i'm not the only one who sat down last night for all star weekend as a tradition for years of my life and was like wtf it's over.

that does not help the game and it all builds upon eachother.

I feel you. All Star Weekend was/is supposed to be the marquee All Star weekend in all of sports…saying it should take a backseat to the fukkin Winter Olympics is offensive to even type, but that’s what it’s become and I don’t see an easy solution when they sold out to NBC off nostalgia and vibes over a superior basketball presentation and product in TNT.

Combine that with a third of the league approaching regular season games like the stars in the league approach playing in the All Star game and the NBA has got real issues all over the place they need to sort out

Can’t remember if it was Reddit or IG but someone posted a video of Rosenberg complaining about how NBA ASW isn’t a go to event anymore. The typical mf’s was in the comments was talking about he old and this and that and the athletes are more athletic and skilled (no clue wtf that has to do with all star weekend but whatever).

I remember taking leave from Germany specifically to go to the one in the A in ‘03. shyt was crazy. The Vegas ASW was legendary. I went to the one in 2010 in Dallas and although it was kinda wack cause of the weather, it was still a meetup event. I know DC nikkas who still talk about ASW. Just looked it up but how many times are they gonna have this shyt in LA?

Adam Silver needs to let someone else take over.

This been a narrative for years because brehs said he gay or he too liberal, that's not my reasoning.

Game has grown internationally, time to let someone else step back in because it's dying in the country of origin. He listened to too many Bill Simmons podcasts about criticisms of the league. It became too much about transactions and drama. All the mid season tournament and weird gimmicks for all star game are products of podcast ideas from people who only watch the NBA to gamble anyway.

No real fans gave a fukk about any of that. Fix the league asap or for real NHL status once the few stars left retire. Wemby not saving this shyt when they have to trade one of his best players to stay under the apron in 2 years. NBA cooked under Adam Silver.
