Saturday May 20th: Live on Showtime from the MGM National Harbor.
Main Event - WBC Featherweight Championship of the World
Champion: Gary Russell Jr (27-1-0 16 ko's) vs Challenger: Oscar Escandon (25-2-0 17 ko's)
As the eldest son in a boxing family from Capitol Heights, Md., Gary Russell Jr. always had envisioned fighting in his home town. The only stipulation was he needed to have a title before making his debut in or around the District.
With that requirement met, Russell proudly stepped to the lectern on Thursday afternoon to announce his upcoming fight against Oscar Escandon in the main event of a card set for March 11 at the Theater at National Harbor.
The World Boxing Council featherweight title will be on the line in the first sporting event to take place at the 4,000-seat venue inside the recently opened MGM property in Oxon Hill that includes a casino, restaurants and high-end retail shopping.
“It’s definitely a pleasure to be here,” Russell said. “Everybody from my home, it’s my home town, they want me to come home. I never wanted to come home and compete unless I was a world champion. I figured that was the only way to do it. Can’t come home empty-handed.”
Russell (27-1, 16 knockouts) won the WBC world championship with a fourth-round knockout of Jhonny Gonzalez on March 28, 2015, in Las Vegas. The speedy southpaw made his first title defense one year later with a second-round knockout of Patrick Hyland at Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut.
Not long after, discussions began for Russell’s next bout.
When the MGM National Harbor opened officially on Dec. 9, 2016, with an event space a short walk from the casino floor, it provided an ideal setting finally for Russell to fight in the D.C. area.
The closest Russell had come to fighting in the nation’s capital had been in 2014 when he scored a fourth-round knockout of Miguel Tamayo at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
“We are thrilled to be promoting the first fight at the new MGM National Harbor,” said Tom Brown, president of TGB Promotions based in Sherman Oaks, Calif. “Bringing such a competitive matchup as Gary Russell Jr. against Oscar Escandon is not only a great night for us and our other partners but the fans in Washington, D.C.”
Russell, meanwhile, is fighting on the same card as two of his younger brothers, both also named Gary after the family patriarch and trainer Gary Russell Sr. Gary Antonio is an unbeaten bantamweight, and Gary Antuanne, a 2016 Olympian, will make his professional debut.
Co-Features: Andre Dirrell (25-2, 16 KOs) vs. José Uzcátegui (26-1, 22 KOs) – IBF Super Middleweight Interim World Championship
Rances Barthelemy (25-0, 13 KOs) vs. Kiryl Relikh (21-1, 19 KOs) – WBA Super Lightweight Eliminator
I can't wait for this card. Seeing the man with the fastest hands in boxing and World's #1 Featherweight do work once again. It's a privilege and a honor .
