The suburbs
Which person do you think ends up saving more money? Or better yet, who ends up with more discretionary income ?

Both have an apartment they rent

No roommates

Both have to get to work(not close enough to walk for either)

No kids

No school debt for either

For sake of argument the small town is in Tennessee(no state tax )

Is that gross or net income?

If we go by gross income, that's $7600/month. 5% 401k & health insurance, figure your take home is $7000/month. Rent, utilities, and food will be your highest expenses. I'd budget $5000/month just for those 3. Public transportation should be what, another $500? That leaves you with $1500/month.

I think the NY person will have more income leftover vs. the small town person.

Even in NY $3000/week is very good money. You can get a decent one bedroom apartment in Brooklyn for $3K. That leaves you with $9000 for the month to spend. Make it $1500/week for a more interesting hypothetical.

Your number are off..

Just ran a tax calculator… take home would be roughly $8,400
